Objectives To answer a national research priority by comparing the risk-benefit and costs associated with reverse total shoulder replacement (RTSR) and anatomical total shoulder replacement (TSR) in patients having elective primary shoulder replacement for osteoarthritis. Design Population based cohort study using data from the National Joint Registry and Hospital Episode Statistics for England. Setting Public hospitals and publicly funded procedures at private hospitals in England, 2012-20. Participants Adults aged 60 years or older who underwent RTSR or TSR for osteoarthritis with intact rotator cuff tendons. Patients were identified from the National Joint Registry and linked to NHS Hospital Episode Statistics and civil registration mortality data. Propensity score matching and inverse probability of treatment weighting were used to balance the study groups. Main outcome measures The main outcome measure was revision surgery. Secondary outcome measures included serious adverse event

A blood test successfully predicted most knee osteoarthritis cases up to 8 years before signs of the disease first appeared on X-ray, according to data published in Science Advances. “This confirms our expectation that very early OA is silent and ‘hiding in plain sight’ due to the fact that cartilage tissue has no nerves and therefore can be degraded early on without giving off

Mashup Score: 2Reflections on 30 years of publishing osteoarthritis research: Where we’ve been and where we’re going - 14 day(s) ago
In March 2023, we called on the community to reflect on the thirty years that have passed since the first issue of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage (OAC). In the first issue of OAC, Charles Menkes, the first president of what is now known as the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) asked, “Is osteoarthritis one or several diseases? Are the present classification and radiographic criteria adequate? Should these issues be investigated by an international committee of experts?” In this 30th Anniversary Special Issue of OAC, we considered where the field has been, whether we have been able to address the questions put forth by Dr.

Patients with pro-inflammatory diets demonstrate worse knee osteoarthritis pain and a greater risk for 10-year severe pain trajectory, according to data published in Arthritis Care & Research. “The absence of drugs that can slow or reverse the progression of osteoarthritis and the challenges in effectively managing pain through analgesics have prompted the identification of factors that

As few as one-in-five people with knee osteoarthritis use all recommended non-surgical treatments.1 One potential approach to increase the use of these treatments is to deliver a treatment package when people are awaiting total knee replacement surgery; a time when patients often experience worsening health and might be more likely to adhere to care. In The Lancet Rheumatology, A Hamish R W Simpson and colleagues evaluated the feasibility of an intervention package for people with knee osteoarthritis awaiting a primary total knee replacement.
