US Government, states reign in insurers’ prior authorisation
The Biden Administration and state legislatures are cracking down on insurance companies’ reliance on prior authorisation rules (also known as precertification or preauthorisation reviews), which require physicians to justify treatments before they are administered—a practice that critics contend delays care, harms patients, drives up administrative costs, and contributes to physician burnout. The number of medications and procedures that require preauthorisation has climbed over recent years.
