Innovative solutions and investments are needed to recruit and train new, diverse members of the public health workforce while better supporting those already in our field. A lack of investment in public health made responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and other key health issues extremely challenging and are continually testing, stretching and stressing the public health workforce. As recent challenges bring a better understanding of what is required to best protect and promote health—including better data, transforming our public health infrastructure, and addressing systemic challenges to our health and well-being through policy and environmental changes—ensuring this workforce has the right skills and expertise to take on these challenges will be essential.
