Brasilia, February 7, 2024 – On an official visit to Brazil, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Jarbas Barbosa, and the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, met on Monday 5 February with the President of the Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the country’s Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, where they reviewed priority issues to make the country, the region and the world healthier, safer and more equitable.

A special report on the health budget for 2024 highlighted that in 2022 around 400 000 people benefited from SMA, with an estimated cost representing 0·47% of national health-care expenditure.1 Since its creation, right wing and extreme-right wing groups have insinuated that SMA attracts migrants into the French welfare state system.2 The global context accentuated those demagogic anti-migration discourses.
