The obesity epidemic in the USA continues to escalate, posing a significant public health crisis. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the prevalence of adult obesity (BMI ≥30·0 kg/m2) increased from 30·5% in 2000 to 41·9% in 2020. During the same time, the prevalence of severe obesity (BMI ≥40·0 kg/m2) increased from 4·7% to 9·2%. The age-adjusted prevalence of obesity is highest among Black individuals (49·9%), followed by Hispanic (45·6%), White (41·4%), and Asian (16·1%) individuals.
