The increasing prevalence of fake publications created by paper mills poses a significant challenge to maintaining scientific integrity. While integrity analysts typically rely on textual and visual clues to identify fake articles, determining which papers merit further investigation can be akin to searching for a needle in a haystack, as these fake publications have non-related authors and are published on non-related venues. To address this challenge, we developed a new methodology for provenance analysis, which automatically tracks and groups suspicious figures and documents. Our approach groups manuscripts from the same paper mill by analyzing their figures and identifying duplicated and manipulated regions. These regions are linked and organized in a provenance graph, providing evidence of systematic production. We tested our solution on a paper mill dataset of hundreds of documents and also on a larger version of the dataset that deliberately included thousands of documents inten

Mashup Score: 26The impact of maternal prenatal psychological distress on the development of epilepsy in offspring: The Japan Environment and Children’s Study - 10 day(s) ago
The relationship between maternal prenatal psychological distress and epilepsy development in offspring has not yet been clarified. Herein, we used a dataset obtained from the Japan Environment and Children’s Study, a nationwide birth cohort study, to evaluate the association between six-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6) scores and epilepsy among 1–3 years old. The data of 97,484 children were retrospectively analyzed. The K6 was administered to women twice: during the first half (M-T1) and second half (M-T2) of pregnancy. M-T1 ranged from 12.3–18.9 (median 15.1) weeks, and M-T2 ranged from 25.3–30.1 (median 27.4) weeks. Participants were divided into six groups based on K6 scores of two ranges (≤4 and ≥5) at M-T1 and M-T2. The numbers of children diagnosed with epilepsy at the ages of 1, 2, and 3 years were 89 (0.1%), 129 (0.2%), and 149 (0.2%), respectively. A maternal K6 score of ≥5 at both M-T1 and M-T2 was associated with epilepsy diagnosis ratios among 1-, 2-, and 3-

The assessment and management of risk are fundamental to mental health care provision and are considered high-priority tasks by professionals worldwide. Clinical guidance recommends for risk to be identified and managed collaboratively with the individual, but studies indicate that this may not be happening in practice. The aim of this study was to identify the barriers and enablers to collaborative risk assessment and management based on shared decision-making from service users’ perspectives. A qualitative approach using semi‐structured interviews was employed. The Theoretical Domains Framework for behaviour change, which consists of fourteen theoretical domains that have been found to influence behaviour, informed data collection and analysis. Thirteen service users living with severe mental illness took part in an interview. The majority of participants reported not having been involved in the identification of their risk and most were unaware of the information included in their r

Mashup Score: 4B cell receptor dependent enhancement of dengue virus infection - 12 day(s) ago
Author summary Dengue virus (DENV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen that infects an estimate 400 million people every year. A unique feature of DENV is immune-mediated enhancement, wherein a first (primary) DENV infection can predispose an individual to a more severe secondary infection. The leading explanation for this phenomenon is antibody dependent enhancement (ADE), wherein antibodies generated in response to a primary DENV infection bind but fail to neutralize virions introduced during a secondary infection, thereby allowing DENV to gain entry to Fc-receptor expressing cells. Accordingly, a key prediction of this model is that monocytes, macrophages, and other Fc-receptor expressing phagocytes should be the primary cellular reservoir of DENV during an acute secondary DENV infection. However, it has been noted for decades that B cells are a significant cellular reservoir of DENV, including during secondary DENV infection, representing a disconnect in our understanding of immune-mediat

Mashup Score: 4The contribution of vulnerability to emotional contagion to the expression of psychological distress in older adults - 13 day(s) ago
This study examines the differential weight of a wide range of factors—sociodemographic factors, indicators of autonomy, social support, coping styles, vulnerability to emotional contagion, and empathy—in the presence of two profiles of psychological distress and in their absence. This cross-sectional study included 170 older adults. As assessed by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), 65.9% of the individuals in the sample had a clinical or subthreshold level of anxiety and depression (score > 1). Based on the HADS’s clinical cutoff scores for the anxiety and depression subscales, three profiles were created for the no distress, anxiety, and anxious depression groups. The profiles did not differ on demographic indicators except for sex. Vulnerability to emotional contagion, satisfaction with the social network and coping styles emerged as factors weighing the likelihood of being in either of the psychological distress groups relative to individuals with no distress. Mashup Score: 1Best practices for estimating and reporting epidemiological delay distributions of infectious diseases - 14 day(s) ago
Epidemiological delays are key quantities that inform public health policy and clinical practice. They are used as inputs for mathematical and statistical models, which in turn can guide control strategies. In recent work, we found that censoring, right truncation, and dynamical bias were rarely addressed correctly when estimating delays and that these biases were large enough to have knock-on impacts across a large number of use cases. Here, we formulate a checklist of best practices for estimating and reporting epidemiological delays. We also provide a flowchart to guide practitioners based on their data. Our examples are focused on the incubation period and serial interval due to their importance in outbreak response and modeling, but our recommendations are applicable to other delays. The recommendations, which are based on the literature and our experience estimating epidemiological delay distributions during outbreak responses, can help improve the robustness and utility of repor

Author summary The Clare Island Home Health Project aims to deliver virtual healthcare using a combination of video consultations, remote physiological monitoring, and artificial intelligence to members of a remote island community off the west coast of Ireland. The project seeks to improve patient care by assisting with the management of chronic disease. In this study, nine participants in the Project were interviewed to gather insights on their experiences with the forms of technology that are used during the Project. Thematic analysis was used to generate themes from the interview data, to identify recurring patterns of expression among participants in relation to their experiences. The findings were then mapped onto the Theoretical Domains Framework to identify the factors influencing participants’ level of engagement with the technology. The findings revealed that factors such as optimism, social influences and emotion were influential in determining the extent to which participan
