A decade ago, the National Lipid Association (NLA) took the bold step of releasing a document, the NLA Recommendations for the Patient-Centered Management of Dyslipidemia-Part One,1 shortly after the publication of the 2013 American College of Cardiology/ American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) Guideline on the Treatment of Blood cholesterol2. While the ACC/AHA Guideline had a singular focus on the use of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses of those trials to make their patient care recommendations, the NLA Recommendations were based on the totality of evidence, also including observational trials and mechanistic data.
