Mashup Score: 0Association between body mass index and tic disorders in school-age children - BMC Pediatrics - 12 hour(s) ago
Objective To explore the relationship between body mass index (BMI ) and the severity of tic disorders (TDs) in children 6–14 years old. Methods A total of 86 children diagnosed with TDs in a hospital between Jan. 2023 and Sept. 2023 were collected by convenient sampling method, and the general data and TD-specific data were collected and analyzed. Results Univariate analysis showed that patients with different Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) grades had statistically significant differences in age, BMI, residence, snacking pattern, weekly physical exercise frequency, weekly physical exercise time, and proportion of cesarean birth. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the YGTSS score grades were related to BMI, snacking pattern, and cesarean birth of the patients. Correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between BMI grades and the YGTSS score grades, with a higher BMI indicating more severe TDs. Predictive value evaluation showed that BMI, snacking pattern,

Mashup Score: 0Metabolic and inflammatory perturbation of diabetes associated gut dysbiosis in people living with and without HIV infection - Genome Medicine - 13 hour(s) ago
Background Gut dysbiosis has been linked with both HIV infection and diabetes, but its interplay with metabolic and inflammatory responses in diabetes, particularly in the context of HIV infection, remains unclear. Methods We first conducted a cross-sectional association analysis to characterize the gut microbial, circulating metabolite, and immune/inflammatory protein features associated with diabetes in up to 493 women (~ 146 with prevalent diabetes with 69.9% HIV +) of the Women’s Interagency HIV Study. Prospective analyses were then conducted to determine associations of identified metabolites with incident diabetes over 12 years of follow-up in 694 participants (391 women from WIHS and 303 men from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study; 166 incident cases were recorded) with and without HIV infection. Mediation analyses were conducted to explore whether gut bacteria–diabetes associations are explained by altered metabolites and proteins. Results Seven gut bacterial genera were identif

To explore the impact of the Mediterranean diet on cardiovascular risk factors, glycemic control and weight loss in patients with type 2 diabetes(T2D) by a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrance Library, EMBASE and four Chinese databases to identify RCTs that compared the Mediterranean diet with control diets in patients with T2D up to December 2021. The Risk of Bias of the included studies was assessed using the version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tools for randomized trials (ROB 2). Seven RCTs with 1371 patients met the eligibility criteria and entered into the meta-analysis. Compared to control diets, the beneficial effects of Mediterranean diet were not statistically significant in high-density lipoprotein (MD = 2.33; 95% CI: -0.27 to 4.92), low-density lipoprotein (MD = -2.34; 95% CI -5.67 to 0.99) and total cholesterol (MD = 2.60; 95% CI: -0.95 to 6.15). But Mediterranean diet led to reduce the level of diastolic bloo

Background Family and school environment play a crucial role across the different developmental stages of adolescence. This paper investigates the potential mediating role of family and school environments in the relationship between the three psychosocial predictors of depression, anxiety, stress, and Internet addiction (IA). Specifically, it focuses on the two stages of early and middle adolescence. Methods The study involved a survey of 407 adolescents from Qatar, comprising 250 early adolescents and 157 middle adolescents. Inclusion criteria for the study included adolescents between the ages of 10 to 17 years old, residents of Qatar and studying in a Qatar-based school. To assess the constructs of the three psychosocial predictors, IA, family environment, the study utilized the Depression, Stress, and Anxiety Scale (DASS), the Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ), and the Brief Family Relationship Scale, respectively. School environment was measured using questions f

Background To analyse the association among the simultaneous effects of dietary intake, daily life behavioural factors, and frailty outcomes in older Chinese women, we predicted the probability of maintaining physical robustness under a combination of different variables. Methods The Fried frailty criterion was used to determine the three groups of “frailty”, “pre-frailty”, and “robust”, and a national epidemiological survey was performed. The three-classification decision tree model was fitted, and the comprehensive performance of the model was evaluated to predict the probability of occurrence of different outcomes. Results Among the 1,044 participants, 15.9% were frailty and 50.29% were pre-frailty; the overall prevalence first increased and then decreased with age, reaching a peak at 70–74 years of age. Through univariate analysis, filtering, and embedded screening, eight significant variables were identified: staple food, spices, exercise (frequency, intensity, and time), work fre

Mashup Score: 0Single Cell Atlas: a single-cell multi-omics human cell encyclopedia - Genome Biology - 2 day(s) ago
Single-cell sequencing datasets are key in biology and medicine for unraveling insights into heterogeneous cell populations with unprecedented resolution. Here, we construct a single-cell multi-omics map of human tissues through in-depth characterizations of datasets from five single-cell omics, spatial transcriptomics, and two bulk omics across 125 healthy adult and fetal tissues. We construct its complement web-based platform, the Single Cell Atlas (SCA, www.singlecellatlas.org ), to enable vast interactive data exploration of deep multi-omics signatures across human fetal and adult tissues. The atlas resources and database queries aspire to serve as a one-stop, comprehensive, and time-effective resource for various omics studies.

Background Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a significant problem affecting millions of people worldwide. Three widely implemented psychological techniques used for CLBP management are cognitive therapy (CT), mindfulness meditation (MM), and behavioral activation (BA). This study aimed to evaluate the relative immediate (pre- to post-treatment) and longer term (pre-treatment to 3- and 6-month follow-ups) effects of group, videoconference-delivered CT, BA, and MM for CLBP. Methods This is a secondary analysis of a three-arm, randomized clinical trial comparing the effects of three active treatments—CT, BA, and MM—with no inert control condition. Participants were N = 302 adults with CLBP, who were randomized to condition. The primary outcome was pain interference, and other secondary outcomes were also examined. The primary study end-point was post-treatment. Intent-to-treat analyses were undertaken for each time point, with the means of the changes in outcomes compared among the three g

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the selective loss of motor neurons (MNs), resulting in progressive disability and mortality with a rapid course. Current approaches such as multidisciplinary care, disease-modifying therapies, pulmonary in tervention, and dietary and nutritional intervention can only slow ALS progression [1]. It is imperative to dissect the underlying mechanisms and explore novel treatment targets. Trans-reactive DNA binding protein 43

Mashup Score: 4Smoking during pregnancy and its effect on placental weight: a Mendelian randomization study - BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth - 2 day(s) ago
Background The causal relationship between maternal smoking in pregnancy and reduced offspring birth weight is well established and is likely due to impaired placental function. However, observational studies have given conflicting results on the association between smoking and placental weight. We aimed to estimate the causal effect of newly pregnant mothers quitting smoking on their placental weight at the time of delivery. Methods We used one-sample Mendelian randomization, drawing data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) (N = 690 to 804) and the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) (N = 4267 to 4606). The sample size depends on the smoking definition used for different analyses. The analysis was performed in pre-pregnancy smokers only, due to the specific role of the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1051730 (CHRNA5 – CHRNA3 – CHRNB4) in affecting smoking cessation but not initiation. Results Fixed effect meta-analysis showed a 1

Mashup Score: 10Muscle loss phenotype in COPD is associated with adverse outcomes in the UK Biobank - BMC Pulmonary Medicine - 2 day(s) ago
Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with systemic consequences that can cause a muscle loss phenotype (MLP), which is characterized by the loss of muscle mass, muscle strength, or loss of both muscle and fat mass. There are limited data comparing the individual traits of MLP with clinical outcomes in a large unbiased cohort of COPD patients. Our aim was to determine the proportion of patients who met criteria for MLP in an unbiased sample of COPD patients at the population-level. We also determined if specific MLP features were associated with all-cause and COPD-related mortality. Methods A retrospective population-based cohort analysis of the UK Biobank was performed. COPD was defined by a FEV1/FVC ratio < 0.7, physician established diagnosis of COPD, or those with a COPD-related hospitalization before baseline assessment. MLP included one or more of the following: 1) Low fat-free mass index (FFMI) on bioelectric impedance analysi
