Proteinuria plays a central role in the diagnosis of kidney disease and has a high prognostic value. The test methods used differ considerably regarding impact on test accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Therefore, knowledge of the methodology is crucial for the interpretation of the results. In addition to the distinction between semi-quantitative and quantitative tests, there are also relevant differences within the two methods. In general, semi-quantitative tests are easy to handle but have limitations such as: i) incomplete quantification, ii) a lack of specificity regarding the type of proteinuria, iii) a high rate of false positive tests with the need for re-testing with a quantitative method for verification.

Mashup Score: 27Trends in Kidney Allograft Failure Among First-Time Transplant Recipients in the United States - 12 day(s) ago
The management and outcomes of kidney transplant recipients have evolved over the past three decades. This study of U.S patients whose first kidney allograft failed sought to understand long-term trends in subsequent waitlisting, re-transplantation, and all-cause mortality.

Living donor kidney transplant (LDKT) is the treatment of choice for patients with advanced kidney disease. Kidney paired donation (KPD), originally proposed to overcome immunological barriers, has now evolved to address biological and chronological incompatibilities and reduce financial disincentives. This strategy has allowed maximization of the number of LDKTs. In 2021, of the 5971 LDKT, 1115 (18.6%) were facilitated by KPD. While KPD programs vary in size and structure, privately owned KPD programs dominate the landscape.

Mashup Score: 32Glomerular Filtration of Creatinine: Validation of a Novel Index of Muscle Mass Among Older Adults - 13 day(s) ago
Low muscle mass is common among older adults and associated with poor prognosis. Quantifying muscle mass is challenging in routine clinical practice. We hypothesized that glomerular filtration of creatinine (GFcr) reflects muscle mass, and previously proposed estimated GFcr (eGFcr), as a practical index of muscle mass in older adults. This study investigated whether measured GFcr (mGFcr) and eGFcr are similarly associated with the direct measure of muscle mass, the thigh total muscle lean area (TTMLA).

Mashup Score: 53Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists: New Evidence of Kidney and Cardiovascular Protection From the FLOW and SELECT Trials - 20 day(s) ago
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is an incretin hormone normally secreted by neuroendocrine L cells of the gastrointestinal tract after food ingestion that augments glucose-dependent insulin secretion by pancreatic islet β cells. Additionally, GLP-1 reduces glucagon secretion by islet α cells, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite through effects on the hypothalamus.1 GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) were therefore developed as drugs for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Early trials confirmed the predicted effects of improved glycemic control but also observed substantial weight loss.
