Mashup Score: 3Philip S Hench and the discovery of cortisone - 8 hour(s) ago
This year, 2024, marks the 75th anniversary of the presentation of a landmark discovery in the biology and management of rheumatoid arthritis. On 13 April 1949, Philip S Hench (1896–1965) gave a lecture to an overfilled Mayo Clinic staff meeting in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, on observations of ‘The effect of a hormone of the adrenal cortex (17-hydroxy-11-dehydrocorticosterone: compound E) and of pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone on rheumatoid arthritis’.1 The sensational results were soon known worldwide, making further headlines on 31 May 1949 when Hench presented a more complete report and motion pictures of treated patients at the Seventh International Congress of Rheumatic Diseases held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City (figure 1). As reported by physicians present at the lecture, excitement about an effective treatment, and possibly even cure of one of humankind’s most poorly understood and heretofore untreatable disease was greeted by the hundreds of attendees wit

Mashup Score: 4
Objective To assess the risk of serious infection associated with different targeted therapies for psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in real-world settings. Methods This nationwide cohort study used the administrative healthcare database of the French health insurance scheme linked to the hospital discharge database to identify all adults with PsA who were new users of targeted therapies (adalimumab, etanercept, golimumab, certolizumab pegol, infliximab, secukinumab, ixekizumab, ustekinumab, and tofacitinib) from 1 January 2015 to 30 June 2021. The primary outcome was a serious infection (ie, requiring hospitalisation), in a time-to-event analysis using propensity score-weighted Cox models, with adalimumab as the comparator, estimating weighted HRs (wHRs) and their 95% CIs. Results A total of 12 071 patients were included (mean age 48.7±12.7 years; 6965 (57.7%) women). We identified 367 serious infections (3.0% of patients), with a crude incidence rate of 17.0 per 1000 person-years (95% CI, 15

Mashup Score: 0Axial Spondyloarthritis Treatment Recommendations and Disease Activity Monitoring in Clinical Practice: Results of an Online Survey - 10 hour(s) ago
Objective Clinical practice guidelines are not always followed consistently. To better understand potential barriers to the implementation of treatment recommendations in axial spondyloarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis (axSpA/AS), an online survey was conducted. Methods Email invitations were sent to US rheumatology care providers in January 2023. The questionnaire included 20 questions, with an estimated completion time of 5-7 minutes. Results One hundred four of 441 (24%) invitees participated, including 80/104 (77%) board-certified rheumatologists and 20/104 (19%) fellows. Survey participants identified UpToDate (85%), treatment guidelines (74%), and colleagues (54%) as relevant sources of knowledge for managing axSpA/AS. Of the participants, 64% and 53% considered themselves to be at least moderately familiar with the American College of Rheumatology/Spondylitis Association of America/Spondyloarthritis Research and Treatment Network (ACR/SAA/SPARTAN) and Assessment of Spondyloar
