Social risk factors, including individual poverty and neighborhood deprivation are social determinants of health that influence systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) incidence, disease activity and severity, health-care use patterns, and, ultimately, SLE-related mortality.1–3 Inequities by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status in SLE stem from upstream structural factors (eg, policies that perpetuate racism and income inequality), which contribute to the disproportionate burden of social risk factors (eg, poverty and food insecurity) and adverse environmental exposures, and to disparities in access to high quality care and medications.
