Mashup Score: 156Hemodialysis Vascular Access: Core Curriculum 2025 - 8 day(s) ago
The majority of patients with kidney failure requiring replacement therapy will need the support of hemodialysis during their journey with kidney failure. A reliable functioning vascular access is required to provide hemodialysis. This Core Curriculum reviews the major forms of vascular access (arteriovenous fistula, arteriovenous graft, and central venous catheter) as well as the planning, preparation, creation, use, and maintenance of vascular access, requiring a P-L-A-N (Patient ESKD Life-Plan first then Access Needs) for each patient.

Mashup Score: 60Kidney Care in Times of Crises: A Review - 8 day(s) ago
The global burden of kidney disease is increasing, paralleled by a rising number of natural and man-made crises. During these tumultuous times, accessing vital healthcare resources becomes challenging, posing significant risks to individuals, particularly those with kidney disease. This review delves into the impact of crises on kidney disease, with a particular focus on acute kidney injury (AKI), kidney failure (KF), and kidney transplant (KT). Patients experiencing crush injuries leading to AKI may encounter delayed diagnosis due to the chaotic nature of disasters and limited availability of resources.

Mashup Score: 35Cumulative Blood Pressure Load and Incident CKD - 9 day(s) ago
The association of long-term cumulative blood pressure (BP) loads with the risk of incident chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains a matter of debate. This study aimed to investigate this association among healthy Korean adults with normal kidney function.

Mashup Score: 59Preeclampsia and Long-term Kidney Outcomes - 9 day(s) ago
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related complication characterized by acute hypertension and end-organ dysfunction. We evaluated the long-term association between preeclampsia and the risk of developing chronic hypertension and kidney disease.

Mashup Score: 1Three Ankle-Brachial Index Ranges and Incident CKD in Diabetes: A Goldilocks Perspective on the “Just Right” Range - 10 day(s) ago
The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) is a ratio of highest systolic blood pressure (BP) in the leg (ankle) and highest systolic pressure in the arm (brachial) when taken in the supine position. It is a recommended screening approach for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in patients with diabetes.1 In fact, both atherosclerotic PAD and medial artery calcification are vascular disease states captured by an ABI evaluation. ABI is a prognostic marker for cardiovascular disease events and functional outcomes such as diabetic foot ulceration and amputations.

Mashup Score: 32Associations of Urine and Plasma Metabolites with Kidney Failure and Death in a CKD Cohort - 10 day(s) ago
Biomarkers that enable better identification of persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are at higher risk for disease progression and adverse events are needed. This study sought to identify urine and plasma metabolites associated with progression of kidney disease.

Mashup Score: 21More Exams, More Problems: Do We Really Need a New Accreditation System for Transplant Nephrology? - 11 day(s) ago
The transplant workforce crisis is well-described and will likely worsen in upcoming years. In 2021, over 25,000 kidney transplants were performed in the United States (US), yet 90,000 people with end-stage kidney disease remained on the deceased donor kidney transplant wait list.1 In January of 2024, the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) announced an ambitious goal of achieving 60,000 deceased donor kidney transplants per year by 2026 – a 58% increase in deceased donor transplants.2 Yet as of 2020, the number of transplant nephrologists practicing in the United States was estimated to be between 1,200 and 1,400.

Mashup Score: 62
Glomerulonephritis with dominant C3, a form of C3 glomerulopathy, typically presents with subnephrotic proteinuria and hematuria. Although a minority of patients may present with nephrotic syndrome, about half present with hypertension and impaired glomerular filtration rate. Up to 15% progress to end-stage renal disease. C3 glomerulopathy is rare with a typical age of onset of 30 years (range, 7-70 years).

Mashup Score: 39Clinical Significance of the Cystic Phenotype in Alport Syndrome - 12 day(s) ago
Alport Syndrome (AS) is the most common genetic glomerular disease caused by mutations that affect Type IV collagen. However, the clinical characteristics and significance of AS with kidney cysts are not well defined. This study investigated the prevalence and clinical significance of cystic kidney phenotype in AS.
