Loss of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling in the stomach, achieved by transgenic expression of the BMP inhibitor noggin (H+/K+-Nog mice), causes parietal cell (PC) loss, spasmolytic polypeptide-expressing metaplasia, a marker of preneoplasia, and activation of cell proliferation. We examined if specific inhibition of BMP signaling in PCs leads to aberrations in epithelial homeostasis.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection continues to threaten millions of lives across the globe, despite universal vaccination efforts. Current guidelines for screening, vaccination, and treatment are complex and have left too many people undiagnosed or improperly managed. Antiviral therapy has been shown to significantly reduce the incidence of liver-related complications, including liver cancer….

Paneth cells play a central role in intestinal innate immune response. These cells are localized at the base of small intestinal crypts of Lieberkuhn. The calcium-activated chloride channel TMEM16A and the phospholipid scramblase TMEM16F control intracellular Ca2+ signaling and exocytosis. We analyzed the role of TMEM16A and TMEM16F for Paneth cells secretion.

A 59-year-old asymptomatic woman with no disease history presented to our institution for investigation of a pancreatic tail mass. Hematological parameters were within normal ranges, including serum carcinoembryonic antigen levels and carboxyhydrate antigen 19-9. Computed tomography revealed a strongly enhanced solid peripheral mass with an intracystic component in the pancreatic tail (Figure A,…

Accidental ingestion of the toxic Death Cap mushroom, and others of the Amantina species, can occur due to their physical similarities with commonly edible fungi. Production of certain toxins which prevent protein synthesis can lead to fulminant organ failure and death. Although treatment is mostly supportive due to lack of specific antidote, early recognition can aid in meaningful recovery….
