Mashup Score: 4Tenofovir Is Associated With a Better Prognosis Than Entecavir for Hepatitis B Virus–Related Hepatocellular Carcinoma - 6 hour(s) ago
Whether tenofovir or entecavir has different effects on the prevention of hepatitis B virus (HBV)–related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in secondary and tertiary preventive settings is still a matter of debate. This study aimed to compare the long-term prognosis of HCC between tenofovir and entecavir in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

Noninvasive variceal risk stratification systems have not been validated in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which presents logistical barriers for patients in the setting of systemic HCC therapy. We aimed to develop and validate a noninvasive algorithm for the prediction of varices in patients with unresectable HCC.

Mashup Score: 0Features of Gastrointestinal Strongyloidiasis Hyperinfection: Endoscopy and Histopathology - 12 day(s) ago
A 50-year-old Central American man presented with 2 months of persistent nausea, weight loss, epigastric abdominal pain, and fluctuating diarrhea-constipation. Medical history was significant for HIV/AIDS and stage IV diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. On physical examination, the patient appeared cachectic with temporal wasting and had epigastric tenderness without rebound. Laboratory evaluation revealed 2400 leukocytes/μL with 33% eosinophils, HIV-RNA viral load 20 copies/mL, CD4 count 50 cells/mm3, and C-reactive protein 44.3 mg/L.

Mashup Score: 4Antibiotic Exposure and Risk of New-Onset Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis - 14 day(s) ago
The association between antibiotic exposure and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains controversial, especially whether there is a dose-response relationship. We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to thoroughly evaluate the risk of new-onset IBD associated with antibiotic exposure.

Mashup Score: 1Role of Sex, Anxiety, and Resilience in the Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Irritable Bowel Syndrome - 19 day(s) ago
Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are associated with increased risk of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a female-predominant chronic abdominal disorder. Factors contributing to this association have not been well-studied. We compared sex differences in ACE for adults with and without IBS and evaluated the impact of anxiety and resilience on the relationship between ACE and IBS.

In phase 2 studies, efruxifermin, an Fc–FGF21 analog, significantly reduced steatohepatitis and fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, now called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), for which there is no approved treatment. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity are prevalent among patients with MASH and increasingly treated with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs). This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of efruxifermin in patients with MASH, fibrosis, and T2D taking a GLP-1RA.

Mashup Score: 13Clinical Presentation and Outcomes of Alpha-Gal Syndrome - 23 day(s) ago
Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is an IgE-mediated allergic reaction to galactose-α-1,3-galactose, primarily linked with Lone Star tick bites in the United States. It presents with symptoms ranging from urticaria and gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations to delayed anaphylaxis following red meat consumption. We aimed to study AGS patients’ clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and outcomes.

Diagnosis of AGS should be strongly considered in patients with a history of tick bites and clinical presentation of allergic or GI manifestations. Dietary intervention is effective in most but not all patients: https://t.co/osKDonrNBb @mgrover_gi @lesmana_elvira @SameerRaoMBBS https://t.co/USorR8aQdi

Conventional endoscopic mucosal resection (C-EMR) is established as the primary treatment modality for superficial nonampullary duodenal epithelial tumors (SNADETs), but recently underwater endoscopic mucosal resection (U-EMR) has emerged as a potential alternative. The majority of previous studies focused on Asian populations and small lesions (≤20 mm). We aimed to compare the efficacy and outcomes of U-EMR vs C-EMR for SNADETs in a Western setting.
Source: www.cghjournal.orgCategories: General Medicine News, GastroenterologyTweet-
No previous Western study compared U-EMR vs C-EMR for the management of SNADETs. In this study, compared with C-EMR, U-EMR was associated with comparable technical success but a lower rate of overall AEs and RRA, regardless of lesion size @ruimorais2020 https://t.co/8pmrA5b0Sw https://t.co/Y8n2qioK92

Mashup Score: 14Risk of De Novo Barrett’s Esophagus Post Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Studies With Long-Term Follow-Up - 28 day(s) ago
Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is one of the most commonly performed bariatric procedures worldwide. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a major concern in patients undergoing SG and is a risk factor for Barrett’s esophagus (BE). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the incidence of and analyze predictive factors for post-SG BE.

Mashup Score: 10Food Swamps and Food Deserts Impact on Metabolic Dysfunction–Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Mortality in U.S. Counties - 29 day(s) ago
Lacking access to quality food may increase the risk of metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). We investigated associations between food environment factors (food deserts and food swamps) and MASLD-related mortality across the United States.
