Mashup Score: 2A cost-effectiveness analysis of exercise as a health promotion activity. | AJPH | Vol. 78 Issue 11 - 6 month(s) ago
We used cost-effectiveness analysis to estimate the health and economic implications of exercise in preventing coronary heart disease (CHD). We assumed that nonexercisers have a relative risk of 2.0 for a CHD event. Two hypothetical cohorts (one with exercise and the other without exercise) of 1,000 35-year-old men were followed for 30 years to observe differences in the number of CHD events, life expectancy, and quality-adjusted life expectancy. We used jogging as an example to calculate cost, injury rates, adherence, and the value of time spent. Both direct and indirect costs associated with exercise, injury, and treating CHD were considered. We estimate that exercising regularly results in 78.1 fewer CHD events and 1,138.3 Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) gained over the 30-year study period. Under our base case assumptions, which include indirect costs such as time spent in exercise, exercise does not produce economic savings. However, the cost per QALY gained of $11,313 is favo

Mashup Score: 1Likelihood of COVID-19 Outbreaks in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Centers, 2020‒2021 | AJPH | Vol. Issue - 7 month(s) ago
Objectives. To determine facility-level factors associated with COVID-19 outbreaks in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers. Methods. We obtained COVID-19 case counts at 88 ICE detention facilities from May 6, 2020, through June 21, 2021, from the COVID Prison Project. We obtained information about facility population size, facility type (dedicated to immigrants or mixed with other incarcerated populations), and facility operator (public vs private contractor) from third-party sources. We defined the threshold for a COVID-19 outbreak as a cumulative 3-week incidence of 10% or more of the detained population. Results. Sixty-three facilities (72%) had at least 1 outbreak. Facilities with any outbreak were significantly more likely to be privately operated (P < .001), to have larger populations (113 vs 37; P = .002), and to have greater changes in their population size over the study period (‒56% vs −26%; P < .001). Conclusions. Several facility-level factors were

Mashup Score: 2Effectiveness of CBT-Informed Behavioral Health Interventions for Health Care Workers in a Specialized Clinical Service During the COVID-19 Pandemic - 11 month(s) ago
Objectives. To evaluate symptomatology and clinical outcomes among treatment-seeking health care workers (HCWs). We examined engagement, presenting symptomatology, and treatment outcomes among a diverse group of HCWs in a large urban health system. Methods. Demographic and pretreatment–posttreatment outcome data were available for 69 HCWs who sought cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), with or without medication management, at a specialized clinical center from July 1, 2020, to April 25, 2022. Results. Treatment-seeking HWCs predominantly identified as female (78.3%) and non-White (53.6%) and had a mean age of 36.33 ± 10.72 years. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests showed significant reductions in all symptoms and increased well-being (P < .001), with effect sizes ranging from 0.59 to 0.71. Conclusions. Our findings replicate those of existing research on the prevalence of psychiatric distress among HCWs, uniquely focusing on those seeking care. Our outcome data suggest that short-term CBT is e

Mashup Score: 1Grassroots and Digital Outreach Strategies Raise Awareness of COVID-19 Information and Research in Baltimore City - 11 month(s) ago
We aimed to disseminate reliable COVID-19 information to the Black and Latino communities of Baltimore City, Maryland, between July 2020 and December 2022. With community partners, we disseminated evidence-based COVID-19 information via grassroots and digital strategies, including Hopkins Opportunity for Participant Engagement, and connected volunteers to COVID-19 research. Using a multimodal approach facilitated dissemination of reliable information and raised awareness of research; evaluation of trust is ongoing. Robust, multimodal strategies are needed to foster trust and equity among diverse communities. (Am J Public Health. 2024;114(S1):S69–S73. https://doi.org/10.2105/AJPH.2023.307492)
