Mental health and support 1 year after the earthquakes in Türkiye
On the first anniversary of the Türkiye–Syria earthquakes, we reflect on the mental and psychosocial support activities for earthquake survivors and revisit our initial evidence-based recommendations in the light of our observations and field activities.1 The official death toll following these major earthquakes surpassed 50 000 people, with many more injured both in Türkiye and North Syria. More than 3 million people were estimated to be internally displaced within Türkiye (most of whom have migrated to relatively low-risk cities2), losing loved ones, homes, livelihoods, and belongingness in the process, and eroding the very foundations of their collective identity and cultural heritage.
