Mashup Score: 3Subclinical atherosclerosis in young adults predicting cardiovascular disease: The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study - 2 hour(s) ago
Atherosclerosis is accompanied by pre-clinical vascular changes that can be detected using ultrasound imaging. We examined the value of such pre-clinical features in identifying young adults who are at risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD).

High coronary artery calcification (CAC) burden is a significant risk factor for adverse cardiovascular and kidney outcomes. However, it is unknown whether changes in the coronary atherosclerotic burden can accompany changes in kidney disease progression. Here, we evaluated the relationship between CAC progression and the risk of kidney failure with replacement therapy (KFRT).

Mashup Score: 0Remnant cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apoB absolute mass changes explain results of the PROMINENT trial. - 3 hour(s) ago
The PROMINENT trial, a cardiovascular outcome trial of the triglyceride- and remnant cholesterol-lowering agent pemafibrate, has shown neutral results despite reduction in plasma triglycerides and remnant cholesterol. We tested the hypothesis that absolute mass changes in remnant cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B explain the results of the PROMINENT trial.

Carriers of the E40K loss-of-function variant in Angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4), have lower plasma triglyceride levels as well as lower rates of coronary artery disease (CAD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). These genetic data suggest ANGPTL4 inhibition as a potential therapeutic target for cardiometabolic diseases. However, it is unknown whether the association between E40K and human diseases is due to linkage disequilibrium confounding. The broader impact of genetic ANGPTL4 inhibition is also unknown, raising uncertainties about the safety and validity of this target.

In a nationally representative population-based study of US adults, the authors sought to examine the association between body mass index (BMI) and all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in a nationally representative sample of adults with and without atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and further stratified by age, sex, and race/ethnicity. The study used data from 2006 to 2015 National Health Interview Survey and categorized participants into the following BMI categories: normal weight (20–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), obesity class 1 (30–34.9), obesity class 2 (35–39.9), and obesity class 3 (≥40 kg/m2). Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality across successively increasing BMI categories overall, and by sociodemographic subgroups. A total of 210,923 individuals were included in the final analysis. In the population without ASCVD, the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality was lower in overweight
