Mashup Score: 25FASTOCH: Feasibility of Electronic Patient-Reported Outcomes in Older Patients With Cancer—A Multicenter Prospective Study - 2 day(s) ago
PURPOSE Multiple studies have demonstrated that electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs) improve overall survival and quality of life in cancer care. However, there are no specific prospective data on remote ePRO monitoring in the older population, although they represent a significant proportion of patients with cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS From February 2021 to April 2022, patients age 75 years and older under active anticancer treatment were consecutively recruited in six institutions. Remote ePRO feasibility was determined in intention-to-test (ITT) on the basis of the number of active users in the overall population. Primary failure applied to patients who had no Internet access or declined to test ePROs, while the other patients were assigned to the ITT population. Feasibility was also determined per-protocol on the basis of the number of active patients in the ITT population. RESULTS Of the 473 patients included, primary failure applied to 288 patients (233 of whom had no In

Mashup Score: 6Exploring the Language Used to Describe Older Patients at Multidisciplinary Cancer Conferences - 9 day(s) ago
Older adults with cancer often present with distinct complexities that complicate their care, yet the language used to discuss their management at multidisciplinary cancer conferences (MCCs) remains poorly understood. A mixed methods study was conducted at a tertiary cancer centre in Toronto, Canada, where MCCs spanning five tumour sites were attended over six months. For presentations pertaining to a patient aged 75 or older, a standardized data collection form was used to record their demographic, cancer-related, and non-cancer-related information, as well as the presenter’s specialty and training level. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were employed to explore MCC depictions of older patients (n = 75). Frailty status was explicitly mentioned in 20.0% of presentations, but discussions more frequently referenced comorbidity burden (50.7%), age (33.3%), and projected treatment tolerance (30.7%) as surrogate measures. None of the presentations included mentions of formal ger

Mashup Score: 21Loneliness and Mortality Risk Among Cancer Survivors in the United States: A Retrospective, Longitudinal Study - 13 day(s) ago
Background: Loneliness, a subjective feeling of being isolated, is a prevalent concern for elderly people and more so among cancer survivors because a cancer diagnosis and its subsequent treatment may result in long-term adverse health effects. This study aimed to examine the association of loneliness and mortality risk among cancer survivors in the United States. Methods: We identified a longitudinal cohort of cancer survivors aged ≥50 years from the nationally representative panel surveys of the 2008–2018 Health and Retirement Study. Follow-up for vital status was through 2020. Loneliness was measured using an 11-item abbreviated version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3), including questions about lacking companionship and feeling isolated from others. A score was assigned according to the responses to each question, with 1 for least lonely, 2 for moderately lonely, and 3 for the loneliest option. Items were summed to create total loneliness scores for each individual, which w

Mashup Score: 23Opportunities for Expanding the Integration of Palliative Care in Oncology Care | Journal of Palliative Medicine - 20 day(s) ago
Patients with cancer and their families comprise a significant population served by palliative care. Close collaboration between oncology clinicians and palliative care teams has demonstrated improved patient-centered care, especially when this care is integrated early in the course of the disease. The American Society of Clinical Oncology recently released their updated clinical practice guidelines for palliative care in oncology, which provide new opportunities for collaboration to expand the scope of care.
