We found that ODS occurred despite appropriate correction rates of hyponatraemia. Factors such as malnutrition, chronic alcoholism, hypokalaemia and hypophosphataemia are thought to play a role in its pathogenesis. Approximately half of the patients survived and became functionally independent.
