The most common medications prescribed to reduce cholesterol are statins, which inhibit the hepatic enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, the limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. Unfortunately, statins are rarely prescribed correctly, resulting in excessive adverse events and very poor patient compliance.
