Mashup Score: 6European Respiratory Society Clinical Practice Guideline on symptom management for adults with serious respiratory illness - 7 hour(s) ago
Respiratory symptoms are ubiquitous and impair health-related quality of life in people with respiratory disease. This European Respiratory Society (ERS) task force aimed to provide recommendations for symptomatic treatment in people with serious respiratory illness. The ERS task force comprised 16 members, including representatives of people with serious respiratory illness and informal caregivers. Seven questions were formulated, six in the “Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome” (PICO) format, which were addressed with full systematic reviews and evidence assessed using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). One question was addressed narratively. An “evidence-to-decision” framework was used to formulate recommendations. To treat symptoms in people with serious respiratory illness, the task force suggests the use of graded exercise therapy (conditional recommendation, low certainty of evidence); and suggests the use of a multicomponent ser

The anti–neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)–associated vasculitides (AAVs) are a group of rare pauci-immune autoimmune diseases that involve inflammation of the small blood vessels (1). Although how and when these antibodies develop remains a mystery, multiple organs can be left with irreversible damage. Biopsies show few or no immunoglobulins and complement deposits. Notable AAVs include granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), eosinophilic GPA, drug-induced vasculitis,

Mashup Score: 0Modeling the Human Alveolar Epithelium: Promises and Challenges - 12 hour(s) ago
The tight monolayer of the alveolar epithelium, which is essential for adequate gas exchange and innate immunity of the lung, is composed of alveolar epithelial type I (ATI) and ATII cells. Despite significant improvements in recent years, modeling the alveolar epithelial barrier in vitro remains a major challenge (1, 2). In an ideal scenario, a culture system that uses primary cells with maintained phenotype and function over extended periods and of human origin would be necessary. Unfortunately,
