Mashup Score: 0Partial protection against P. vivax infection diminishes hypnozoite burden and blood-stage relapses - 4 year(s) ago
The majority of Plasmodium vivax infections are relapses from activated hypnozoites. Schäfer et al. show that in a humanized mouse model, partial immune protection with neutralizing antibodies reduces hypnozoite burden and significantly decreases relapse frequencies, indicating that a partially protective vaccine against P. vivax can have significant public health benefits.

Mashup Score: 5Age Patterning in Wild Chimpanzee Gut Microbiota Diversity Reveals Differences from Humans in Early Life - 4 year(s) ago
Reese et al. profile the gut microbiota of wild chimpanzees over the life course. High gut microbial diversity among infants <2 years old contrasts sharply with the low diversity observed in human infants. This divergence could relate to interspecific differences in lactation, diet, and immunity and may contribute to lifelong differences in physiology.

Summary Gnotobiology has revolutionized the study of microbiota-host interactions. This protocol explains how to generate, maintain, and monitor gnotobiotic mice. Three monitoring methods are presented and compared: bacterial culture, microscopy to visualize the presence (or absence) of bacteria using Gram staining or DNA staining, and 16S rRNA gene amplification and sequencing. The generation…

Mashup Score: 0Site-Specific Recombination – How Simple DNA Inversions Produce Complex Phenotypic Heterogeneity in Bacterial Populations - 4 year(s) ago
Many bacterial species generate phenotypically heterogeneous subpopulations as a strategy for ensuring the survival of the population as a whole – an environmental stress that eradicates one subpopulation may leave other phenotypic groups unharmed, allowing the lineage to continue. Phase variation, a process that functions as an ON/OFF switch for gene expression, is one way that bacteria achieve…
