CCR has a mandate to confront the special challenges presented by rare cancers and diseases as well cancers that may be predominant in medically underserved populations. CCR investigators, both at the laboratory bench and in the clinic, are actively engaged in this research endeavor. In many cases, the knowledge CCR’s investigators gain from studying and treating rare cancers and related diseases provides them with insights into the mechanisms that underlie other more common malignancies.

Feb 29 sees the observation of Rare Disease Day, a movement aimed at raising awareness and coordinating efforts globally towards equity in social opportunity, health care, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease. Launched in 2008 by EURORDIS-Rare Diseases Europe in collaboration with more than 60 patient groups, and celebrated on Feb 28 in non-leap years, Rare Disease Day is now recognised in more than 100 countries worldwide. The statistics surrounding rare diseases are striking—defined as affecting fewer than 1 in 2000 people, more than 6000 such diseases have been identified, 72% of which are genetic, with most rare diseases starting in childhood.

Objective Primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) is a rare disease with an increasing prevalence, which may be complicated by life-threatening adrenal crisis (AC). Good quality epidemiological data remain scarce. We performed a Belgian survey to describe the aetiology, clinical characteristics, treatment regimens, comorbidities and frequency of AC in PAI. Methods A nationwide multicentre study involving 10 major university hospitals in Belgium collected data from adult patients with known PAI. Results Two hundred patients were included in this survey. The median age at diagnosis was 38 years (IQR 25–48) with a higher female prevalence (F/M sex ratio = 1.53). The median disease duration was 13 years (IQR 7–25). Autoimmune disease was the most common aetiology (62.5%) followed by bilateral adrenalectomy (23.5%) and genetic variations (8.5%). The majority (96%) of patients were treated with hydrocortisone at a mean daily dose of 24.5 ± 7.0 mg, whereas 87.5% of patients also received fludroco
