Mashup Score: 81Injury incidence and prevalence in elite short-course triathletes: a 4-year prospective study - 3 month(s) ago
Objective To characterise the prevalence, incidence rate (IR) and burden of injuries in elite short-course triathletes over a 4-year training and competition period. Methods Fifty elite Australian triathletes were prospectively monitored for injury during four consecutive seasons (2018β2021). Injuries requiring medical attention were prospectively recorded and further subcategorised according to time loss. The IR and burden (injury IRΓmean injury severity) were calculated per 365 athlete days, with sex differences in IR compared using IR ratios (IRR) from negative binomial regression models. Results Two hundred and sixty-six injuries were reported in 46 (92.0%) athletes, of which 67.3% resulted in time loss. The injury IR was 1.87 injuries per 365 athlete days (95% CI 1.70 to 2.80), and comparable between sexes (IRR 0.82, 95% CI 0.64 to 1.04, p=0.109). Most injuries (70.7%) were training related. The most frequently injured body sites were the ankle (15.8%), foot (12.4%) and lower leg

Mashup Score: 14Associations between cardiorespiratory fitness in youth and the incidence of site-specific cancer in men: a cohort study with register linkage - 3 month(s) ago
Objectives To assess the associations between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in young men and the incidence of site-specific cancer. Methods A Swedish population-based cohort study with register linkage of men who underwent military conscription in 1968β2005 was undertaken. CRF was assessed by maximal aerobic workload cycle test at conscription. Cox regression models assessed linear associations and included CRF, age, year and site of conscription, body mass index and parental level of education. CRF was also categorised into low, moderate and high for facilitated interpretation and results comparing high and low CRF are reported. Results Primary analyses were performed in 1 078 000 men, of whom 84β117 subsequently developed cancer in at least one site during a mean follow-up of 33 years. Higher CRF was linearly associated with a lower hazard ratio (HR) of developing cancer in the head and neck (n=2738, HR 0.81, 95% CI 0.74 to 0.90), oesophagus (n=689, HR 0.61, 95% CI 0.50 to 0.74), s

Mashup Score: 33Causes of sudden cardiac arrest and death and the diagnostic yield of sport preparticipation screening in children - 4 month(s) ago
Objective Evidence on the increased risk of sports-related sudden cardiac arrest and death (SCA/D) and the potential benefit of cardiovascular preparticipation screening (PPS) in children is limited. We assessed the burden and circumstances of SCA/D and the diagnostic yield of cardiovascular PPS in children aged 8β15 years. Methods Data on the incidence and causes of SCA/D from 2011 to 2020 were obtained from the Veneto region (Italy) sudden death registry, hospital records and local press. During the same period, we assessed the results of annual PPS in 25β251 young competitive athletes aged 8β15 years who underwent 58β185 evaluations (mean 2.3/athlete) in Padua, Italy. Results Over 10 years, 26 SCA/D occurred in children aged 8β15 years in the Veneto region: 6 in athletes (incidence 0.7/100 000/year, all β₯12 years) versus 20 in non-athletes (0.7/100 000/year, 17/20 β₯12 years).
