Mashup Score: 11Association of geriatric measures and global frailty with cognitive decline after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation in older adults - 7 month(s) ago
Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) is increasingly offered to older adults, and its potential impact on cognition in this population is understudied. This work aims to evaluate the ability of cancer-specific geriatric assessments (cGA) and a global frailty index based on accumulation of deficits identified in the cGA to predict the risk of cognitive decline after alloHCT in older adults.

Mashup Score: 0The disproportionate burden of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) in diverse older adults diagnosed with cancer - 8 month(s) ago
Older adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) who are then diagnosed with cancer are an understudied population. While the role of cognitive impairment during and after cancer treatment have been well-studied, less is understood about patients who are living with ADRD and then develop cancer. The purpose of this study is to contribute evidence about our understanding of this vulnerable population.

Due to the improved overall survival and life expectancy of older women with breast cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD) arose as the primary cause of non-cancer-related deaths in this population. Therefore, assessing the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of breast cancer patients with comorbid CVD is becoming increasingly vital. Our study aimed to evaluate the association between comorbid CVD and HRQoL among older women with early-stage breast cancer who are receiving adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) in the United States.

Mashup Score: 0Development and testing of the Outcome Prioritization Tool adjusted to older patients with cancer: A pilot study - 8 month(s) ago
In older patients with cancer, the balance between harms and benefits of treatment is delicate. There is a higher risk of adverse outcomes of cancer treatment due to comorbidity and geriatric impairments, while clinical benefit is uncertain due to their frequent exclusion in clinical trials [1,2]. Potential benefits of treatment (for example, increased survival) may come at a cost (for example, increased treatment side-effects or loss of function). As a result, treatment decisions are often preference sensitive, which means that the optimal treatment choice depends on a patient’s personal values and priorities [3].

Geriatric assessment and management (GAM) is recommended by professional organizations and recently several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) demonstrated benefits in multiple health outcomes. GAM typically leads to one or more recommendations for the older adult on how to optimize their health. However, little is known about how well recommendations are adhered to. Understanding these issues is vital to designing GAM trials and clinical programs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the number of GAM recommendations made and adherence to and satisfaction with the intervention in a multicentre RCT of GAM for older adults with cancer.

As the population is ageing, the number of older patients with multimorbidity including cancer continues to increase. To improve care for these patients, the European Union-funded project “Streamlined Geriatric and Oncological evaluation based on IC Technology” (GERONTE) was initiated to develop a new, patient-centred, holistic care pathway. The aim of this paper is to analyse what challenges are encountered in everyday clinical practice according to patients, their informal caregivers, and healthcare professionals as a starting point for the development of the care pathway.

The International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) 2022 Annual Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland focused on the theme of “celebrating resilience,” including resilience of geriatric oncology as a field, resilience in the workplace, and functional resilience of older adults with cancer. SIOG 2022 featured research from 44 countries with 60 talks, 13 oral abstract presentations, and 226 posters. [1] In this report, we highlight studies presented that focused on functional resilience among older adults with cancer.
