Ischemic stroke lesion volume at follow-up is an important surrogate outcome in acute stroke trials. Multiple issues outside of the stroke itself (aspiration pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, etc.) can introduce noise in the clinical treatment effect of acute stroke care.
