From the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve been inundated with mis- and disinformation. It has highlighted the critical role of scientific risk communicators and the ability to provide timely, accurate and comprehensible guidance. The World Health Organization defines risk communication as “the exchange of real-time information, advice and opinions between experts and people facing threats to their health, economic or social well-being. The ultimate purpose of risk communication is to enable people at risk to take informed decisions to protect themselves and their loved ones.” We propose 3 guiding principles every risk and science communicator should follow – both to provide facts, share evidence and science-based information and to manage rumors, misinformation and disinformation.

Unfortunately, only 19% of eligible Americans have received the updated COVID-19 vaccine and less than 50% received this year’s flu vaccine. With elevated activity for COVID-19, flu, and RSV, it’s not too late to benefit from vaccinations and available treatments. The Swiss cheese model of defense remains a reliable strategy for reducing infection risks, and the government’s expanded Home Test to Treat Initiative offers a valuable resource for managing COVID-19 and flu. As we adapt to this new normal, it’s imperative to utilize these tools and strategies to safeguard our health and that of our loved ones, especially the most vulnerable among us. The fight against these respiratory viruses is a collective effort, and by staying informed and proactive, we can navigate this season more effectively.

The ongoing global highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) or bird flu outbreaks in animals and sporadic infections in people highlight the need for ongoing comprehensive surveillance and global public health preparedness. The 2.3.4.4b clade of HPAI A(H5N1) viruses has spread globally, resulting in a record number of outbreaks among various bird populations. Since January 2022, over 17,000 animal outbreaks have been reported to the World Organization for Animal Health by 80 member countries. In the United States, between January 2022 through October 24, 2023, USDA APHIS detected H5N1 virus in over 7,350 wild birds across all 50 U.S. states or territories and in 862 commercial and backyard flocks in 47 states or territories. The virus responsible for COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) undergoes constant genetic changes as it mutates over time. This is normal and what most viruses do. Because of this, we do anticipate the continual emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants. While some of these variants might appear and then fade away – think of the Delta variant which became the dominate variant in the late summer and fall of 2021 in the U.S. – others could increase, potentially taking the place of older variants.
