No accurate and rapid diagnostic test exists for tuberculous meningitis (TBM), leading to delayed diagnosis. We leveraged data from multiple studies to improve the predictive performance of diagnostic models across different populations, settings, and subgroups to develop a new predictive tool for TBM diagnosis. We conducted a systematic review to analyze eligible datasets with individual-level participant data (IPD). We imputed missing data and explored three approaches: stepwise logistic regression, classification and regression tree (CART), and random forest regression. We evaluated performance using calibration plots and C-statistics via internal–external cross-validation. We included 3,761 individual participants from 14 studies and nine countries. A total of 1,240 (33%) participants had “definite” (30%) or “probable” (3%) TBM by case definition. Hepatic cystic echinococcosis (HCE) is a zoonotic disease that occurs when the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus parasitize the livers of humans and mammals. HCE has five subtypes, and accurate subtype classification is critical for choosing a treatment strategy. To evaluate the clinical utility of artificial intelligence (AI) based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in the classification of HCE subtypes via ultrasound imaging, we collected ultrasound images from 4,012 HCE patients at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University between 2008 and 2020. Specifically, 1,820 HCE images from 967 patients were used as the training and validation sets for the construction of the AI model, and the remaining 6,808 images from 3,045 patients were used as the test set to evaluate the performance of the AI models. Novel methods are required to aid the monitoring of schistosomiasis control and elimination initiatives through mass drug administration. Portable digital and mobile phone microscopy is a promising tool for this purpose. This cross-sectional study evaluated the diagnostic operating characteristics of a converted mobile phone microscope (the SchistoScope) for the detection of Schistosoma haematobium eggs, as determined by community-based field workers and expert microscopists, compared with a field gold standard of light microscopy. Three hundred sixty-five urine samples were evaluated by conventional light microscopy, with 49 (13.4%) positive for S. haematobium. Compared with light microscopy, the sensitivity and specificity of S. haematobium detection by field microscopists trained to use the SchistoScope were 26.5% (95% CI: 14.9–41.1%) and 98.4% (95% CI: 96.3–99.5%), respectively. ABSTRACT. Chikungunya fever is a global vector-borne viral disease. Patients with acute chikungunya are usually treated symptomatically. The arthritic phase may be self-limiting. However, many patients develop extremely disabling arthritis that does not improve after months. The aim of this study was to describe the treatment of chikungunya arthritis (CHIKA) patients. A medical records review was conducted in 133 CHIKA patients seen at a rheumatology practice. Patients were diagnosed by clinical criteria and confirmed by the presence of anti-chikungunya IgM. Patients were treated with methotrexate (20 mg/week) and/or leflunomide (20 mg/day) and dexamethasone (0–4 mg/day) for 4 weeks. At baseline visit and 4 weeks after treatment, Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS28) and pain (using a visual analog scale) were ascertained. Angiostrongyliasis, caused by the Angiostrongylus cantonensis roundworm, became reportable in the state of Hawaii in 2007. We confirmed 82 reported cases between 2007 and 2017. There was a median of seven cases per year, and the majority (57%) of cases occurred between January and April. Most (83%) cases were found on the island of Hawaii, with geographic information system (GIS) analysis identifying hot spots on the east side of the island. However, cases were identified on the other major islands as well, suggesting the risk of exposure is present statewide. Comparisons of cases from 2007 to 2017 with cases from previous assessments found no statistical differences in cerebrospinal fluid results, peripheral blood results, or ages of cases. However, differences in geographic distribution of the cases were statistically significant. The 2022 global outbreak of human Mpox (formerly monkeypox) virus (MPXV) infection outside of the usual endemic zones in Africa challenged our understanding of the virus’s natural history, transmission dynamics, and risk factors. This outbreak has highlighted the need for diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics, and implementation research, all of which require more substantial investments in equitable collaborative partnerships. Global multidisciplinary networks need to tackle MPXV and other neglected emerging and reemerging zoonotic pathogens to address them locally and prevent or quickly control their worldwide spread. Political endorsement from individual countries and financial commitments to maintain control efforts will be essential for long-term sustainability.
