Background To delineate the epidemiological landscape of glaucoma using a population-based sample representative of Bangladesh. Methods Using multistage stratified cluster random sampling, households were selected to identify individuals ≥35 years across all 8 divisions of Bangladesh. Sampling frames were derived from the 2011 national census. Fifty-eight study examination sites were set up for comprehensive eye evaluations, including intraocular pressure, gonioscopy and visual field testing when indicated. International Society for Geographic and Epidemiological Ophthalmology definitions were used to define glaucoma and glaucoma suspect cases. Results One hundred forty clusters (89 rural and 51 urban) were randomly selected, and 13 791 residential households were visited. We invited 17 002 individuals ≥35 years for on-site examination, of which 12 000 (71%) complied, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:1. The prevalence of glaucoma was 3.2% (95% CI 2.79% to 3.64%), and glaucoma suspect w

Background Pterygium is a common ocular surface disorder that requires surgical intervention for treatment. Conjunctival autografts are preferred over simple excision due to lower recurrence rates. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the modified sutureless glue-free (MSGF) method with conventional sutures (CS) for conjunctival autograft fixation in primary pterygium surgery. Methods A comprehensive search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, Google Scholar and ClinicalTrials.gov for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing MSGF and CS conjunctival autografts. Outcome measures included operation time, recurrence and postoperative complications. Standardised mean difference (SMD) and risk ratio (RR) were used for continuous and dichotomous outcomes, respectively. Results 11 RCTs involving 833 participants were included. The analysis revealed that MSGF had a significantly shorter operation time compared with CS (SMD −3.704, 95% CI −5.122 to −2.287, p<0.001). CS w

Mashup Score: 0Image-guided orbital surgery: a preclinical validation study using a high-resolution physical model - 27 day(s) ago
Objective Preclinical validation study to assess the feasibility and accuracy of electromagnetic image-guided systems (EM-IGS) in orbital surgery using high-fidelity physical orbital anatomy simulators. Methods EM-IGS platform, clinical software, navigation instruments and reference system (StealthStation S8, Medtronic) were evaluated in a mock operating theatre at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, a tertiary academic hospital in Dublin, Ireland. Five high-resolution 3D-printed model skulls were created using CT scans of five anonymised patients with an orbital tumour that previously had a successful orbital biopsy or excision. The ability of ophthalmic surgeons to achieve satisfactory system registration in each model was assessed. Subsequently, navigational accuracy was recorded using defined anatomical landmarks as ground truth. Qualitative feedback on the system was also attained. Results Three independent surgeons participated in the study, one junior trainee, one fellow an

Mashup Score: 5Head rotation and the perception of eyelid height and contour - 28 day(s) ago
Purpose Effective visual perceptual processing is one of the many components of surgical competence. Human face identification is most efficient when viewed upright. However, it is not yet clear how this perception sensitivity impacts eyelid symmetry. This study investigates surgeons’ and laypeople’s accuracy and efficiency in perceiving eyelid asymmetry from different spatial perspectives. Methods A prospective psychometric experiment was conducted where oculoplastic surgeons were recruited from the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Brazilian Oculoplastic Surgery Society, and control participants were recruited via crowdsourcing (Amazon’s Mechanical Turk). Standard illustrations of the human face with varying degrees of eyelid abnormality, laterality, gender and rotation were presented to participants who were asked to judge whether the eyelids were symmetric or asymmetric. Results The survey was completed by 75 oculoplastic surgeons (49.33% mal

Mashup Score: 4Peripapillary atrophy area predicts the decrease of macular choroidal thickness in young adults during myopia progression - 30 day(s) ago
Objective This study aimed to investigate the influence of peripapillary atrophy (PPA) area and axial elongation on the longitudinal changes in macular choroidal thickness (ChT) in young individuals with myopia. Methods and analysis In this longitudinal investigation, 431 eyes—342 categorised as non-high myopia (non-HM) and 89 as HM—were examined for 2 years. Participants were examined with swept-source optical coherence tomography. The macular ChT, PPA area and axial length (AL) were measured at baseline and follow-up visits. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with ChT changes. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were analysed to ascertain the predictive capacity of the PPA area and axial elongation for the reduction in macular ChT. Results Initial measurements revealed that the average macular ChT was 240.35±56.15 µm in the non-HM group and 198.43±50.27 µm in the HM group (p<0.001). It was observed that the HM group expe

Purpose To explore the current research about the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON). Methods Studies in the literature that focused on OCT, OCTA and DON were retrieved by searching PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane databases and Clinical Trial before 20 June 2023. The methodological quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The quantitative calculation was performed using Review Manager V.5.3. Results Twelve studies met the eligibility criteria and were included. DON group presented lower macular ganglion cell complex in the overall, superior and inferior hemifields compared with the non-DON group. Furthermore, the ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer in DON group was thinner in contrast to the non-DON group. The optic nerve head vessel density was lower in the DON group than that in the non-DON group. A reduction of radial peripapillary capillary vessel density could be seen

Mashup Score: 0Impact of smoking on choroidal microvasculature dropout in glaucoma: a cross-sectional study - 2 month(s) ago
Objective To investigate the effect of smoking on choroidal microvasculature dropout (MvD) in glaucoma. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Tertiary glaucoma centre. Participants 223 eyes of 163 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma who had undergone imaging with optical coherence tomography angiography and completed a questionnaire on smoking from the Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study. Primary outcome measures Linear mixed-effects models were used to determine the effect of each parameter on MvD area and angular circumference. The sensitivity analysis was performed by categorising the glaucoma severity determined by visual field mean deviation (MD). Results MvD was found in 37 (51.4%) eyes with smoking history and in 67 (44.4%) eyes with non-smokers (p=0.389). Larger MvD area and wider angular circumference were found in smokers compared with non-smokers (p=0.068 and p=0.046, respectively). In a multivariable model, smoking intensity was significantly associated with MvD

Mashup Score: 15Outer retinal corrugations in late-onset retinal degeneration: a diagnostic finding demonstrated with multimodal imaging - 2 month(s) ago
Objective Late-onset retinal degeneration (L-ORD) is a rare autosomal dominant retinal degeneration that presents in the sixth decade and leads to severe visual loss. The objective of this paper is to describe outer retinal corrugations as a diagnostic feature of L-ORD. Methods This retrospective study reviewed consecutive patients diagnosed with L-ORD, confirmed through complete ophthalmic examination, multimodal imaging and genetic tests. Multimodal imaging investigations included spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and ultra-wide-field colour and autofluorescence fundus photographs. Results A total of 13 eyes of 9 patients with L-ORD had outer retinal corrugations identified on OCT scans. Conclusion Outer retinal corrugations may be a diagnostic finding for L-ORD. The detection of this sign may aid diagnosis and characterisation of this disease and help in the differential diagnosis with other acquired pathologies. Data are available on reasonable request. Data are

Mashup Score: 5Eyecare practitioner perspectives and attitudes towards myopia and myopia management in the UK - 3 month(s) ago
Objective Many children with progressive myopia are still prescribed single-vision correction. An investigation into UK eyecare practitioners’ (ECPs) perceptions of myopia management was carried out to ascertain factors which may be limiting its implementation and uptake within clinical practice. Methods and analysis Online focus groups were held with UK ECPs. Participants were encouraged to discuss their knowledge of the available myopia management options, their perception of how myopia management is being delivered in the UK and any barriers limiting ECPs’ prescribing of these management options in practice. The discussions were transcribed and analysed thematically. Results Focus groups were held with 41 ECPs from primary and secondary eyecare. ECPs felt that provision of myopia management in the UK is variable. Most ECPs believe they have sufficient knowledge, but felt a lack of confidence in decision-making and practical experience. Less experienced ECPs sought more definitive gu
