Engineering blood and lymphatic microvascular networks
The human vasculature plays a crucial role in the blood supply of nearly all organs as well as the drainage of the interstitial fluid. Consequently, if these physiological systems go awry, pathological changes might occur. Hence, the regeneration of existing vessels, as well as approaches to engineer artificial blood and lymphatic structures represent current challenges within the field of vascular research. In this review, we provide an overview of both the vascular blood circulation and the long-time neglected but equally important lymphatic system, with regard to their organotypic vasculature.
