Mashup Score: 1From the Archives: Commentary on the Article Entitled “Endoscopic versus open carpal tunnel release: A randomized trial” - 11 hour(s) ago
In most aspects of life, technology has played a key role in improving lives and advancing our capability. Throughout all aspects of surgery, minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopy have been successfully adopted and implemented, benefiting surgeons, patients, and indirectly, society as a whole. After being described as a surgical technique by Johann Mikulicz in 1881, it took nearly a century for endoscopy to gain wide acceptance as a reliable surgical technique. German surgeon Kurt Semm is now credited as the father of modern endoscopy, but as he was developing techniques such as laparoscopic appendectomy in the 1960s and 1970s, the validity of his work was viewed with deep skepticism.

Mashup Score: 1National Survey on Antithrombotic Management in Minor Hand Surgery - 12 hour(s) ago
Temporarily withholding antithrombotic medications for surgical procedures can increase thromboembolic risk. Many patients undergoing minor hand surgeries take these medications, requiring careful perioperative management by surgeons. Although general guidelines exist for periprocedural antithrombotic management, guideline adherence among surgeons performing minor hand procedures is unknown. This study aimed to assess current pre-procedural antithrombotic management strategies employed by hand surgeons for patients undergoing minor hand surgeries, specifically focusing on how closely these practices align with established clinical practice guidelines.

Mashup Score: 1Augmented Reality-Based Finger Joint Range of Motion Measurement: Assessment of Reliability and Concurrent Validity - 1 day(s) ago
This study aimed to determine the reliability and concurrent validity of finger joint range of motion (ROM) measurement using augmented reality (AR)-based hand tracking in a sample of healthy hands. Additionally, the study aimed to determine which camera view of the hand provided ROM measurements with the highest concurrent validity at each joint.

Mashup Score: 0The Use of Cannabinoids in the Treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy and Neuropathic Pain: A Systematic Review - 2 day(s) ago
Peripheral neuropathies are commonly occurring conditions that are chronic and debilitating for patients. Established nonsurgical treatments have yielded mixed and patient-dependent results. Although cannabinoids have demonstrated efficacy as a treatment for central neuropathic pain, the therapeutic potential of cannabis-based medications for the management of peripheral neuropathic pain caused by nerve injury, trauma, and other noncompressive etiologies has yet to be definitively established. This study aims to determine whether cannabinoids are a potentially effective treatment for pain and symptoms associated with peripheral neuropathy.

Mashup Score: 1
We studied variation in interpretation of specific symptoms during clinical tests for carpal tunnel syndrome to estimate the degree to which surgeons consider pain without paresthesia characteristic of median neuropathy.

Mashup Score: 1Mid-Term Outcomes Following Trapeziectomy With Suture Suspensionplasty for Thumb Carpometacarpal Joint Osteoarthritis - 4 day(s) ago
In the treatment of symptomatic thumb carpometacarpal joint arthritis, numerous techniques have been used to maintain the trapezial space following trapeziectomy. The purpose of this study was to report the clinical and radiographic outcomes of the suture suspensionplasty technique. The hypothesis was that suture suspensionplasty would have similar clinical and radiographic outcomes compared with other techniques aimed at maintaining the trapezial space following trapeziectomy.

Mashup Score: 1Direct Economic Burden of Cubital Tunnel Surgery in the United States: Total Payments and Components of Cost - 5 day(s) ago
Despite its widespread prevalence, the cost of cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) in the United States to patients and insurers is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to quantify the direct payments associated with operative treatment of CuTS. We hypothesized that CuTS represents a substantial cost to the payer in facility fees, surgeon fees and other expenses.

Mashup Score: 12Proximal Pole Scaphoid Fracture Nonunion Treated With Ipsilateral Hamate Transfer: A Case Series - 6 day(s) ago
The scaphoid’s retrograde blood flow renders it vulnerable to fracture nonunion proximally. As proximal fragmentation occurs, reconstructive options become challenging with little consensus regarding treatment. Proposed surgical techniques include vascularized or nonvascularized grafts and fragment excision with scapholunate (SL) ligament advancement. We hypothesized that ipsilateral proximal hamate with volar capitohamate ligament autograft would provide a viable treatment for proximal pole scaphoid nonunion in a sample drawn from a military population.

Mashup Score: 2Arterial Perfusion of the Medial Femoral Trochlea Flap Examined by Micro–Computed Tomography Angiography - 8 day(s) ago
The medial femoral trochlea (MFT) flap is a source of vascularized articular cartilage that has most commonly been used for reconstruction of proximal pole scaphoid nonunions and lunate osteonecrosis in Kienbock disease. This study aimed to describe the arterial perfusion of the MFT.
