    Bold proposals will prohibit sale of cigarettes to anyone born in or after 2009 On 4 October 2023 the UK prime minister, Rishi Sunak, announced his intention to introduce legislation ensuring that from 1 January 2027, and on the same day every year thereafter, the minimum age of sale for tobacco would rise by one year. If enacted, people aged 14 and under today will never be able legally to purchase cigarettes, making England only the second country (after New Zealand) to introduce this measure. Current adult smokers will be unaffected by the new law.
