Historically, the availability of an HLA-matched donor was required for successful outcomes of HCT, to minimize the risk of graft rejection, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and nonrelapse mortality (NRM). An HLA-matched sibling donor (MSD) is the preferred donor, but this donor option is available in only 30% of patients [2]. In the absence of an MSD, an HLA-matched unrelated donor (MUD) may be identified through volunteer donor databases.
