Mashup Score: 4Interaction between type 2 diabetes and past COVID-19 on active tuberculosis - BMC Infectious Diseases - 14 hour(s) ago
Background The global setback in tuberculosis (TB) prevalence and mortality in the post-COVID-19 era has been partially attributed to pandemic-related disruptions in healthcare systems. The additional biological contribution of COVID-19 to TB is less clear. The goal of this study was to determine if there is an association between COVID-19 in the past 18 months and a new TB episode, and the role played by type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) comorbidity in this relationship. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 112 new active TB patients and 373 non-TB controls, identified between June 2020 and November 2021 in communities along the Mexican border with Texas. Past COVID-19 was based on self-report or positive serology. Bivariable/multivariable analysis were used to evaluate the odds of new TB in hosts with past COVID-19 and/or DM status. Results The odds of new TB were higher among past COVID-19 cases vs. controls, but only significant among DM patients (aOR 2.3). The odds of T

Background Immunosuppressive therapies are associated with a risk of infections. Nevertheless, their incidence in this population remains unclear. This study aims to determine the incidence of serious respiratory tract infections (SRI) in a population exposed to immunosuppressive therapies. Methods Data from a representative sample of the French healthcare claims from 01/01/2014 to 12/31/2019 were analyzed. Exposure to immunosuppressive therapy was defined by the dispensation of drugs through community pharmacies or in hospitals. SRI diagnosis was based on ICD-10 codes from hospitalization records. A cohort analysis was performed to estimate standardized SRI incidence rates. A nested case-control analysis within this cohort was used to study the characteristics associated with SRI. Results We identified 24,122 individuals exposed to immunosuppressive therapies, among which 1,559 developed SRI, resulting in a standardized incidence rate of 1,398 per 100,000 person-years. Background The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the end of the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) global public health emergency on May 5, 2023, but its long-term consequences have still been haunting the global population. Post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) and long-term COVID-19 are serious concerns and present with various symptoms. Intranasal chlorpheniramine (iCPM) has been shown to decrease the viral burden of SARS-COV-2. iCPM uses decreased COVID-19 disease progression and severity in Accelerating COVID-19 Clinical Recovery in an Outpatient Setting (ACROSS)-I & III randomized control trials (RCT). Methods This prospective survey study included 259 participants in ACROSS I and III RCTs. We compared the effect of iCPM versus placebo on the reduction of PASC symptoms. A PASC questionnaire containing 17 questions regarding the most common PASC symptoms was used in this study. T-test and Pearson chi-square statistics were performed according to continuous and categorical data using ST

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted public health, with emerging evidence suggesting substantial effects on maternal and neonatal health. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to quantify the prevalence and risk of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in newborns born to mothers infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. Methods We conducted a literature search in Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science up to April 20, without language or date restrictions. Observational studies reporting on the prevalence or risk of RDS among newborns from mothers with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were included. Quality assessment was performed using the JBI tool. Statistical analysis was performed by using R software version 4.3. Results Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence of RDS among newborns born to COVID-19-infected mothers was 11.5% (95% CI: 7.4–17.3%), with significant heterogeneity (I² = 93%). Newborns from infect

Mashup Score: 4Risk factors of diphtheria outbreak in damt district of Al Dhalea Governorate, 2023 -Yemen: a case–control study - BMC Infectious Diseases - 1 month(s) ago
Background In Yemen, diphtheria has become an important health problem since 2017 when diphtheria re-emergence as a consequence of war and the collapse of the health system. In 2023, there has been a 57% increase in diphtheria cases compared to 2021 and 2022. Damt district of Al Dhalea Governorate had the highest reported cases for year 2023. The study aims to determine the risk factors associated with diphtheria outbreak in Damt District. Methods A retrospective matched case–control (1:2) was used. All confirmed cases based on the WHO case definition reported from Damt district during 2023 were considered cases. Two age-matched (± 5years) neighborhood controls were recruited per case. A pretested questionnaire was used for collecting data during household interviews including demographic and household characteristics, knowledge of diphtheria, vaccination status, contact with a case of diphtheria, and travel history. Frequency and proportion for quantitative and median with interquarti

Background Recovery from SARS CoV-2 infection is expected within 3 months. Long COVID occurs after SARS-CoV-2 when symptoms are present for more than 3 months that are continuous, relapsing and remitting, or progressive. Better understanding of Long COVID illness trajectories could strengthen patient care and support. Methods We characterized functional impairments, quality of life (QoL), and cognition among patients who recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection within 3 months (without Long COVID), after 3 months (Recovered Long COVID), or remained symptomatic (Long COVID). Among 7305 patients identified with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection between March 2020 and December 2021, confirmed in the medical record with laboratory test or physician diagnosis, 435 (6%) completed a single self-administered survey between March 2022 and September 2022. Multi-domain QoL and cognitive concerns were evaluated using PROMIS-29 and the Cognitive Change Index-12. Results Nearly half the participants (47.7%)

Mashup Score: 0The association between adherence to unhealthy plant-based diet and risk of COVID-19: a cross-sectional study - BMC Infectious Diseases - 1 month(s) ago
Background The fast spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic and its high mortality were quickly considered by the health community. Dietary patterns play an important role in strengthening or weakening the immune system and thus incidence of diseases. Aim The present study can provide a comprehensive picture of the association between adherence to unhealthy plant-based diet (uPDI) and COVID-19 incidence. Methods This study was undertaken on 8157 adults’ participants of the Yazd Health Study (YaHS) and Taghzieh Mardom-e-Yazd (TAMIZ) study aged 20 to 70 years. Data on dietary intakes were obtained using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between uPDI and COVID-19. Results We found a significant association between uPDI and the risk of COVID-19 (OR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.05–1.75) in the crude model. After adjusting potential confounders, a significant increasing trend in the odds of COV

Mashup Score: 2Immunopathological markers and cell types linked to COVID-19 symptom manifestation - BMC Infectious Diseases - 1 month(s) ago
Background Numerous studies have investigated the molecular properties that contribute to the symptoms of COVID-19, such as the virus’s genetic makeup, its replication mechanisms, and how it interacts with host cells. However, identifying the immunopathological properties, such as the immune system’s response, cytokine levels, and the presence of specific biomarkers, that are associated with the severity of the infection remains crucial for developing effective treatments and preventions. Methods We analyzed blood protein factor profiles from 420 individuals to identify features differentiating between test-negative healthy, asymptomatic, and symptomatic individuals using statistical comparison and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (i.e., LASSO) algorithm. Additionally, we examined single-cell RNA sequencing data from 141 individuals to identify specific cell types associated with the COVID-19 symptoms. Results Healthy individuals who tested negative had distinct bloo
