Mashup Score: 6Assessment and medical management of weight regain after adolescent metabolic and bariatric surgery: a narrative review - 20 hour(s) ago
Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) in adolescents results in durable treatment of severe obesity and related complications for most. However, substantial weight regain can undermine long-term health benefits. There is no evidence-based standard of care for the medical management of weight regain after MBS in pediatrics or adults. This narrative review summarizes current pediatric evidence pertaining to the assessment and medical management of post-MBS weight regain, identifies gaps, and offers recommendations.

Mashup Score: 32ASMBS Review of the Body Mass Index - 22 day(s) ago
The American Medical Association designated obesity as a disease in 2013.[1] In 2022, six leading organizations with a primary focus on obesity came together to create a consensus definition of obesity. The organizations were the Obesity Society (TOS), the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA), the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the Stop Obesity Alliance (STOP), and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AAND).[2] The organizations published the following statement: “Obesity is a highly prevalent chronic disease characterized by excessive fat accumulation or distribution that presents a risk to health and requires lifelong care.

Mashup Score: 4Multisociety clinical practice guidance for the safe use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in the perioperative period - 2 month(s) ago
Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have revolutionized the care of patients with metabolic disease due in part to the agonists’ unique combination of effects, including decreasing hyperglycemia and enhancement of satiety [1,2]. GLP-1, a naturally secreted polypeptide, acts on the GLP-1R in multiple organs, including the pancreas, brain, heart, kidney, and stomach [3]. In the gastrointestinal tract, GLP-1 signals are part of the “ileal brake,” increasing gastric emptying time.

Mashup Score: 3Assessment of Obesity-related Metabolic Conditions (AOMC): A Novel Objective Scoring System Better Informs Metabolic Disease Severity - 3 month(s) ago
Reporting of obesity-associated metabolic disease severity and longitudinal response to bariatric surgery is not standardized. We updated our comorbidity scoring tool to the Assessment of Obesity-related Metabolic Conditions (AOMC) to combine pharmacotherapy and biochemical data to score diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), and dyslipidemia (DYS) severity.

Mashup Score: 2Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass vs Duodenal Switch in Patients with BMI ≥ 50 kg/m2; A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis - 3 month(s) ago
Currently, there is no consensus on the best bariatric surgery type for patients with BMI ≥ 50 kg/m2. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare outcomes of duodenal switch (DS) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in terms of weight loss, resolution of obesity-related comorbidities, and complications among patients with a BMI ≥50 kg/m2. A systematic search was conducted across databases including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science to include studies which compared outcomes of DS and RYGB in patients with BMI ≥50 kg/m2.
