Mashup Score: 3Why use placebos in clinical trials? A narrative review of the methodological literature - 7 day(s) ago
Researchers have a number of different options for their choice of control or comparison intervention in randomized trials. We surveyed the methodological literature looking for reasons why a researcher might choose to administer a placebo (i.e., a mimic intervention) to control subjects. Two implicit assumptions were that the issue of placebo is pertinent only to drug trials and that the nonplacebo effect of a treatment is the “real” or “true” effect. Explicit reasons given in the literature for the use of placebos were facilitating blinding and controlling for the placebo effect.

Mashup Score: 5Quantitative bias analysis methods for summary level epidemiologic data in the peer-reviewed literature: a systematic review - 3 month(s) ago
Quantitative bias analysis (QBA) methods evaluate the impact of biases arising from systematic errors on observational study results. This systematic review aimed to summarize the range and characteristics of quantitative bias analysis (QBA) methods for summary level data published in the peer-reviewed literature.

Mashup Score: 1Panel stacking is a threat to consensus statement validity - 5 month(s) ago
Consensus statements can be very influential in medicine and public health. Some of these statements use systematic evidence synthesis but others fail on this front. Many consensus statements use panels of experts to deduce perceived consensus through Delphi processes. We argue that stacking of panel members towards one particular position or narrative is a major threat, especially in absence of systematic evidence review. Stacking may involve financial conflicts of interest, but non-financial conflicts of strong advocacy can also cause major bias.

Mashup Score: 1GRADE concept paper 8: judging the certainty of discrimination performance estimates of prognostic models in a body of validation studies - 6 month(s) ago
Prognostic models incorporate multiple prognostic factors to estimate the likelihood of future events for individual patients based on their prognostic factor values. Evaluating these models crucially involves conducting studies to assess their predictive performance, like discrimination. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of these validation studies play an essential role in selecting models for clinical practice.
