Mashup Score: 2Fecal Hemoglobin Levels in Prior Negative Screening and Detection of Colorectal Neoplasia: A Dose-Response Meta-Analysis - 2 day(s) ago
Small amounts of blood in stool that do not yield a positive screening test can still raise the risk of future colorectal cancer, suggesting that screening strategies may benefit from refinement.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the commonest cause of anemia in the United States and worldwide. In the United States, it has been estimated that some 5%â11% of women and 1%â4% of men are iron deficient, and approximately 5% and 2%, respectively, have IDA.1 Although the cause of IDA may include inadequate iron intake or absorption, which are common in children and premenopausal women, IDA in adult men and postmenopausal women is often the result of chronic occult gastrointestinal bleeding.

Recently, a population-based study reported that the parental diagnosis of Crohnâs disease (CD) before birth increases the offspringâs risk of incident CD by 6â8-fold compared to the general population.1 However, it is unclear why the timing of the diagnosis of CD in the parent, as it relates to the timing of exposure to the offspring in early life, significantly affects the offspringâs risk of developing CD later in life.

Despite advances in medical therapy, approximately one-half of patients with Crohnâs disease (CD) develop complications ultimately requiring surgery. Currently, no treatment offers a chance of cure.1,2 The increasing incidence and prevalence of CD globally pose a substantial burden at the population and individual levels. Thus, a better understanding of the early triggers of CD is desperately needed to enhance early detection, improve medical therapy, and offer a possibility of interventions that prevent development of CD.

Mashup Score: 110AGA Clinical Practice Guideline on the Prevention and Treatment of Hepatitis B Virus Reactivation in At-Risk Individuals - 1 month(s) ago
Hepatitis B reactivation (HBVr) can occur due to a variety of immune-modulating exposures, including multiple drug classes and disease states. Antiviral prophylaxis can be effective in mitigating the risk of HBVr. In select cases, clinical monitoring without antiviral prophylaxis is sufficient for managing the risk of HBVr. This clinical practice guideline update aims to inform frontline health care practitioners by providing evidence-based practice recommendation for the management of HBVr in at-risk individuals.

Historically, women have been underrepresented in surgical and procedural disciplines,1 including gastroenterology (GI). Over the past 6 decades, the number of women in these disciplines has increased, with women GI fellows accounting for 40.5% of the positions in 2023.2,3 Among GI subspecialties, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was selected by 26.5% of all woman GI physicians, compared with 18.9% of all men GI physicians, according to a 2021 study.4 This finding revealed the growing interest in IBD of young woman gastroenterologists; 33.5% of all IBD-GI fellowship positions were filled by women.
