Mashup Score: 9AUA ADVOCACY Expanding the Urological Workforce in Rural America - American Urological Association - 2 month(s) ago
The urological workforce is predominantly located in metropolitan areas, with only 0.5% of urologists in rural areas.1 Interestingly, 62% of counties in the United States do not have a practicing urologist. Furthermore, the rural urological workforce is older, with 29.5% of those over 55 years of age practicing in a rural area compared to only 17% of those less than 54 years of age.1 If the workforce does not replace those in rural areas as they retire, these patients will have decreased access to care.

Mashup Score: 22MEDICAL STUDENT COLUMN Applying to Urology Residency in a World of Change: The Applicant’s Perspective - American Urological Association - 3 month(s) ago
Urology is one of the most competitive specialties with a historically low match rate, reaching as low as 2 of every 3 applicants in the 2022-2023 cycle. Competitiveness is related to the abundance of applicants (∼600) vying for a limited number of positions (∼380), resulting in hundreds of highly qualified applicants going unmatched annually. Additionally, those participating in the 2023-2024 Urology Match will confront complex variables, including being the first to apply without Step 1 board scores and the first to utilize novel preference signaling guidelines. Moreover, interviews will remain entirely virtual. We hope to present strategies for navigating these changes and provide guidance for a successful Urology Match

Mashup Score: 6PROSPECT: A Novel Pilot Program for Underrepresented Minority Medical Students in Urology - American Urological Association - 4 month(s) ago
According to current AUA Census, only 2% of practicing urologists identify as Black and approximately 4% identify as LatinX, and less than 1% Native American. These numbers have not changed over a decade, even though the U.S. population continues to shift, with an estimated 25% of the Medicare population estimated to come from these minority groups by the year 2040. To respond to this workforce need, AUA DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) taskforce members designed a program called PROSPECT to engage, expose, and mentor underrepresented in medicine (URiM) medical students in urology throughout the entirety of medical school.
