Mashup Score: 7Optimizing Safe Opioid Prescribing: A Paradigm Shift in Buprenorphine Management for Orthopaedic Surgery - 2 day(s) ago
The worsening opioid epidemic in the United States, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitates innovative approaches to pain management. Buprenorphine, a long-acting opioid, has gained popularity due to its safety profile and accessibility. Orthopaedic surgeons, encountering an increasing number of patients on buprenorphine, face challenges in perioperative management. This article will update orthopaedic surgeons on new developments in the understanding of buprenorphine as a pain reliever and share evidence-based practice guidelines for buprenorphine management.

Mashup Score: 15Complications and Survivorship After Aseptic Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty: Is There a Difference by Surgical Approach? - 3 day(s) ago
Revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA) has traditionally been performed through the posterolateral approach (PA). Anterior approaches (AA) for rTHA are increasingly being utilized. The purpose of this study was to compare complications and survivorship from re-revision and reoperation after aseptic rTHA performed using an AA versus a PA.

Mashup Score: 17Return to Cycling After Total Joint Arthroplasty - 4 day(s) ago
As total joint arthroplasty (TJA) candidates become younger, patients’ expectations continue to expand. We surveyed our patient population to determine rates of return to cycling after TJA so that we could provide more accurate counseling on performance and safety.

Mashup Score: 1
Although risk calculators are used to prognosticate postoperative outcomes following revision total hip and knee arthroplasty (total joint arthroplasty [TJA]), machine learning (ML) based predictive tools have emerged as a promising alternative for improved risk stratification. This study aimed to compare the predictive ability of ML models for 30-day mortality following revision TJA to that of traditional risk-assessment indices such as the CARDE-B score (congestive heart failure, albumin ( 65 years of age), and body mass index (BMI) of < 25 kg/m2), 5-item modified frailty index (5MFI), and 6MFI.

Mashup Score: 7Outcomes of Total Knee Arthroplasty in Patients Who Have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: A Matched Cohort Study - 8 day(s) ago
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an excellent surgical option for patients who have end-stage knee osteoarthritis. While rates of major postoperative complications have steadily decreased with modern implants and operative techniques, contemporary outcome data for patients who have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) are scarce. The goal of this study was to compare complication rates after primary TKA in patients who have EDS versus matched controls.

Mashup Score: 3Operating Room Air May Harbor Pathogens: The Role of an Ultraviolet Air Filtration Unit - 9 day(s) ago
One important factor for the prevention of surgical site infections is ultraclean air in the operating room (OR). Still, the direct sterilization potential of most technologies, especially in a dynamic clinical setting, is not well understood. We aimed to determine and compare the microbial presence from the inlet and outlet flow of a filtration unit with crystalline ultraviolet-C (C-UVC) light.

Mashup Score: 2Predictive Modeling of Medical- and Orthopaedic-Related 90-Day Readmissions Following Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty - 10 day(s) ago
The rate of unplanned hospital readmissions following total hip arthroplasty (THA) varies from 3 to 10%, representing a major economic burden. However, it is unknown if specific factors are associated with different types of complications (ie, medical or orthopaedic-related) that lead to readmissions. Therefore, this study aimed to: (1) determine the overall, medical-related, and orthopaedic-related 90-day readmission rate; and (2) develop a predictive model for risk factors affecting overall, medical-related, and orthopaedic-related 90-day readmissions following THA.

Mashup Score: 6Multiple Joint Arthroplasty in Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Patients: A National Longitudinal Cohort Study - 11 day(s) ago
Many patients suffer from osteoarthritis (OA) in multiple joints, possibly resulting in multiple joint arthroplasties (MJAs). Primarily, we determined the cumulative incidence (Cin) of MJA in hip and knee joints up to 10 years. Secondly, we calculated the mean time between the first and subsequent joint arthroplasty, and evaluated the different MJA trajectories. Lastly, we compared patient characteristics and outcomes (functionality and pain) after surgery between MJA patients and single hip arthroplasty or knee arthroplasty (HA and KA) patients.

Mashup Score: 7Normative Values for Daily Functional Recovery Patterns Following Total Knee Arthroplasty - 12 day(s) ago
Wearable devices provide the ability for clinical teams to continuously monitor patients’ rehabilitation progress with objective data. Understanding expected recovery patterns following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) enables prompt identification of patients failing to meet these milestones. The aim of this study was to establish normative values for daily functional recovery in the first 6 weeks after TKA using a wearable device.
