Recent approval of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in patients at lower risk profiles has resulted in a real-world expansion in patients with Bicuspid Aortic Valves (BAV), otherwise excluded from trials comparing TAVR to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). Compare perioperative and longitudinal outcomes between BAV patients undergoing TAVR vs. SAVR.

Mashup Score: 51The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Intermacs 2024 Annual Report: Focus on Outcomes in Younger Patients - 5 day(s) ago
The 15th Annual Report from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support (Intermacs) includes 29,634 continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) from the 10-year period between 2014 through 2024. The outcomes reported here demonstrate continued improved survival in the current era of fully magnetically levitated (Mag-Lev) devices, with a significantly higher 1-year (85.7% versus 78.4%) and 5-year (59.7% versus 43.7%) survival than those receiving non-Mag-Lev devices.

Mashup Score: 1Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy: The Potentially Curative Treatment of Choice for Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension - 1 month(s) ago
Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a consequence of unresolved organized thromboembolic obstruction of the pulmonary arteries, which can cause pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular failure. Owing to its subtle signs, determining its exact incidence and prevalence is challenging. Furthermore, CTEPH may also present without any prior venous thromboembolic history, contributing to underdiagnosis and undertreatment. Diagnosis requires a high degree of suspicion and is ruled out by a normal ventilation/perfusion ratio scintigraphy.

Mashup Score: 0Total Arterial Multivessel Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: 5-Year Outcomes - 1 month(s) ago
Total arterial revascularization is associated with superior outcomes to conventional coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery performed with the left internal thoracic artery (ITA) and veins. It is often performed with bilateral ITAs that increase risk of sternal wound infection. Minimally invasive multivessel CABG through a left anterior minithoracotomy eliminates sternal wound complications. However, being performed only in a few specialized centers, there is a paucity in follow-up outcome data.

Although work-family balance impacts specialty selection for medical students of both sexes, pregnancy and childbearing experiences are unique to women. Cardiothoracic surgery, with low female representation, must prioritize these issues to support women entering the field. This study compared family planning experiences between male and female cardiothoracic surgeons.
