Avian Influenza Leading to Many Deaths Among Birds, Spreading to Cattle

Dear readers,

The major infectious disease stories going on at the moment are about Avian influenza (H5N1), which is, unfortunately, leading to many deaths among birds and has been found in cattle, with some transmission from mammals to humans. Human-to-human transmission is NOT efficient, which would be required for pandemic potential, so the situation is being monitored. A universal influenza vaccine that is not as linked to the H and N proteins in the future is recommended.

Measles cases in the US have surpassed 100 cases in this first quarter of 2024 (more than the cases over all of 2023), 83% among unvaccinated. These outbreaks are related to eroding trust in public health professionals surrounding vaccines, which we must rebuild as infectious disease specialists. Long-acting HIV medications for both treatment and prevention are getting much attention with some exciting options. However, we need better global access to prevent the disparities of the past. The RSV vaccine is promising for lasting into a second season and even having utility for those under 60 (currently only approved for 60 years and older) with health conditions in a separate trial.

Finally, this is a time of heartbreaking war and famine, especially for children. I hope the world can become a more peaceful place.

Thank you,
Monica
