Healthcare has experienced tremendous consolidation in the last two decades with the formation of large healthcare systems that have subsumed smaller hospitals, clinics, and practices to create network conglomerates. With the increase in size and scope of these quaternary healthcare systems, the services offered to patients are expansive with care delivered by physicians and providers with significant expertise. In part this pattern has been triggered by rising costs for labor, materials, and operational expenses.
