In June 2024, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) released a twenty-year follow-up to the 2003 Unequal Treatment report – which originally concluded that pervasive health inequities (referred to then as health disparities) were in large part a result of structural and systemic racism in healthcare. Ending Unequal Treatment: Strategies to Achieve Equitable Health Care and Optimal Health for All, offers a comprehensive, deeply researched, evidence-based review of health and health care inequities within the US health care system. The report explores the barriers that continue to weaken and undermine efforts to achieve more equitable health care, and it presents recommendations for future actions that, taken together, would achieve a more effective and sustained approach to measuring and addressing the problem, with implications for nursing science.
