Mashup Score: 0Distinct Topological Properties of the Reward Anticipation Network in Preadolescent Children With Binge Eating Disorder Symptoms - 1 month(s) ago
Few studies have considered the neural underpinnings of binge eating disorder (BED) in children, despite clinical and subclinical symptom presentation occurring in this age group. Symptom presentation at this age is of clinical relevance, as early onset of binge eating is linked to negative health outcomes. Studies in adults have highlighted dysfunction in the frontostriatal reward system as a potential candidate for binge eating pathophysiology, although the exact nature of such dysfunction is currently unclear.

This commentary discusses best practices for responding to fentanyl-related overdose deaths in adolescents and young adults, and it outlines the current state of knowledge about them. Various types of approaches to fentanyl-related overdoses in this age group may need to be developed based on the different risk factors that are emerging from the existing data. We describe the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) behavioral health services research priorities connected with fentanyl-related overdoses in youth. We highlight a key target for intervention and discuss research opportunities related to early intervention with youth with identifiable risk factors. NIDA’s research agenda is a means of assisting communities that experience fentanyl-related overdoses by providing scientific information that can be translated into clear recommendations for public action.

Mashup Score: 0What’s in a Name? From Book Forum to Media Forum - 1 month(s) ago
As editors of the Book Forum, we have seen an increased interest in authors writing reviews in other media sources besides books. This is not a surprise as we find more media sources that we go to for information as well as entertainment. On top of that, for better or worse, our patients are spending more of their time on other sources of media besides books. We are often unfamiliar with these media sources and are unable to engage meaningfully with our patients. This can be important in rapport building, which was a consideration when we had people review, for example, the video games Fortnite and Among Us. It can also be important in understanding the safety concerns of a media source, preparing our readership of child and adolescent psychiatrists to talk about controversial, potentially triggering topics with patients (ie, Thirteen Reasons Why). The goal of the Book Forum has always been to introduce child and adolescent psychiatrists to materials that would be important for their e

Mashup Score: 3Responding to the Youth Fentanyl Crisis: Practical Guidance for Child Psychiatrists - 1 month(s) ago
Deaths due to unintentional opioid overdose among youth living in the United States have risen at an extraordinary rate over the past 4 years.1 After remaining stable over the preceding decade, the rate of drug overdose deaths increased more than 2.3-fold from 2019 to 2021 to a record high of 5.49 deaths per 100,000 youth.1 This rise in fatal overdoses is largely due to increased prevalence of illicitly manufactured fentanyl in the drug supply. In 2021, fentanyl was identified in 77.1% of overdose deaths among US adolescents, a 23.5-fold increase from 2010, compared to 13.3% for benzodiazepines, 5.8% for prescription opioids, and 2.3% for heroin.1 Compared to other phases of the opioid crisis, fentanyl-related overdoses are characterized by extraordinarily broad geographic and sociodemographic reach.
