The potential role of AI in diagnosing melanoma and other skin cancers
Harald Kittler, MD, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria, discusses using artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnose skin cancers. Dermoscopic and clinical images provide ideal image-based sources for deep learning and machine learning algorithms to diagnose neoplastic skin diseases. However, further research is necessary to close the gap in performance between experimental and real-life settings and to determine the level of expertise required for the appropriate use of AI diagnostics for melanoma and other skin cancers.
