Mashup Score: 2Study Finds Most Patients Who Need Gonioscopy Don’t Get It - 17 day(s) ago
N ew research found that more than 70 percent of patients receiving an initial glaucoma evaluation in the United States do not have record of gonioscopy. 1 In this retrospective, case-c ontrol study, researchers assessed patterns in gonioscopy during initial glaucoma evaluations in the United States. Subjects with a diagnosis of glaucoma suspect, anatomical narrow angle (ANA) or primary/secondary glaucoma were included. Among the 198,995 patients (56 percent female, 44 percent male) in this analysis,

Mashup Score: 42Effect of non-overlapping visual field defects on vision related quality of life in glaucoma - 2 month(s) ago
Glaucoma patients may be considered to have normal vision as long as each point of visual space is perceived by at least one eye, that is, with an intact binocular visual field. We aimed to investigate the effect of non-overlapping visual field (VF) defects on vision-related quality life (VR-QoL) in glaucoma.

The binocular visual field (VF) strongly predicts vision related quality of life (VR-QoL) in #glaucoma. This study shows that non-overlapping VF defects (monocular defects that do not affect the binocular VF) also impact VR-QoL significantly #ophthalmology https://t.co/EX38q8qvUV https://t.co/PL87zj4SCd

Mashup Score: 9Evaluation of Verteporfin as a Novel Antifibrotic Agent in a Rabbit Model of Glaucoma Filtration Surgery - 4 month(s) ago
Verteporfin is a benzoporphyrin derivative which is Food and Drug Administration-approved for treatment of choroidal neovascularization in conjunction with photodynamic therapy. It has been shown to prevent fibrosis and scar formation in several organs and represents a promising novel antifibrotic agent for glaucoma surgery. The goal of this study is to determine the effect of verteporfin on wound healing after glaucoma filtration surgery.

A 72-year-old woman with a history of multiple retinal detachment surgeries including silicone oil and cataract surgery in the right eye was referred for persistent hypotony. Ultrasound biomicroscopy showed a deep anterior chamber centrally, iris bombé (white arrows, A, B), seclusio pupillae (asterisk), silicone oil particles (white arrowheads, A, B), Soemmering’s ring (blue arrow, A), cyclitic membrane, and suprachoroidal effusion. Spectral domain-OCT showed undulations of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and cystoid macular edema (CME, C) (Magnified version of Figure A-C is available online at www.ophthalmologyglaucoma.org).
