Health policy impacts the way surgical and trauma patients access, recover from, and pay for the medical care we deliver. In this editorial, we highlight 3 major policy directives that have or will affect millions of surgical and injured patients—Medicaid expansion, surprise billing, and housing in previously redlined districts. In doing so, we aim to elucidate the mechanisms by which health policies impact our patients and encourage participation and inquiry among surgeons when new health policies are being proposed at a national, state, or local level.

Adhesions between the abdominal wall and intestinal tract from previous surgeries can complicate reoperations; however, predicting the extent of adhesions preoperatively is difficult. This study aimed to develop a straightforward approach for predicting adhesion severity using a novel abdominal ultrasound technique that quantifies the displacement of motion vectors of two organs to enhance surgical safety. The efficacy of this methodology was assessed experimentally and clinically.

Mashup Score: 16Obesity and overweight are associated with worse survival in early-onset colorectal cancer - 7 month(s) ago
Obesity and its associated lifestyle are known risk factors for early-onset colorectal cancer and are associated with poor postoperative and survival outcomes in older patients. We aimed to investigate the impact of obesity on the outcomes of early-onset colorectal cancers.

Dense inflammation obscuring the hepatocystic anatomy can hinder the ability to perform a safe standard laparoscopic cholecystectomy in severe cholecystitis, requiring use of a bailout procedure. We compared clinical outcomes of laparoscopic and open subtotal cholecystectomy against the traditional standard of open total cholecystectomy to identify the optimal bailout strategy for the difficult gallbladder.

Mashup Score: 2Comprehensive outcomes after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass with a near-complete 15-year follow-up - 7 month(s) ago
Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass has a well-established safety and efficacy profile in the short and mid-term. Long-term outcomes remain limited in the literature, especially for follow-up periods of >10 years. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the long-term durability and safety of laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass over a near-complete 15-year follow-up.

Mashup Score: 12Mechanisms of delayed indocyanine green fluorescence and applications to clinical disease processes - 7 month(s) ago
Delayed indocyanine green fluorescence imaging is under investigation in various clinical disease processes. Understanding the mechanisms of indocyanine green accumulation and retention is essential to correctly interpreting and analyzing imaging data. The purpose of this scoping review was to synthesize what is known about the mechanism of indocyanine green retention at the cellular level to better understand the clinical nuances of delayed indocyanine green imaging and identify critical gaps in our knowledge to guide future studies.
