Mashup Score: 1Objective performance indicators differ in obese and nonobese patients during robotic proctectomy - 3 month(s) ago
Robotic surgery is perceived to be more complex in obese patients. Objective performance indicators, machine learning–enabled metrics, can provide objective data regarding surgeon movements and robotic arm kinematics. In this feasibility study, we identified differences in objective performance indicators during robotic proctectomy in obese and nonobese patients.

Mashup Score: 22Preserving The Academic Mission - 3 month(s) ago
Healthcare has experienced tremendous consolidation in the last two decades with the formation of large healthcare systems that have subsumed smaller hospitals, clinics, and practices to create network conglomerates. With the increase in size and scope of these quaternary healthcare systems, the services offered to patients are expansive with care delivered by physicians and providers with significant expertise. In part this pattern has been triggered by rising costs for labor, materials, and operational expenses.

Mashup Score: 5Hybrid robotic systems - 4 month(s) ago
Standard laparoscopic instruments have limited dexterity because of their few degrees of freedom, making some surgical tasks extremely challenging. Robotic surgery was developed to overcome these issues, but the da Vinci system is associated with high costs. During recent years, many companies developed new robotic systems to improve dexterity and ergonomics with less impact on cost-effectiveness. This work describes the main commercially available modular robotic platforms, focusing on the technology, architecture and features, and advantages and disadvantages of each system.

Mashup Score: 57Pathologic complete response following neoadjuvant chemotherapy in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: Impact on survival and recurrence - 4 month(s) ago
Pathologic complete response after neoadjuvant treatment in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a rare occurrence. Similar to other malignancies, achieving a pathologic complete response in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma seems to correlate with improved survival. However, because of the rarity of such events, the true significance of pathologic complete response in pancreatic cancer remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of pathologic complete response on survival and recurrence.

Mashup Score: 6Impact of slit compared with nonslit mesh in laparoscopic groin hernia repairs—A comprehensive propensity score analysis of a cohort of 611 hernias - 4 month(s) ago
The slit-mesh technique for laparoscopic groin hernia repair remains controversial. We present the largest cohort of patients to date that have undergone laparoscopic hernia repair with this technique and aim to evaluate the impact of both techniques on postoperative recurrence and other secondary outcomes.

Mashup Score: 5
The rise of high-definition imaging and robotic surgery has independently been associated with improved postoperative outcomes. However, steep learning curves and finite human cognitive ability limit the facility in imaging interpretation and interaction with the robotic surgery console interfaces. This review presents innovative ways in which artificial intelligence integrates preoperative imaging and surgery to help overcome these limitations and to further advance robotic operations.

Mashup Score: 4The burden of readmissions after rib fractures among older adults - 6 month(s) ago
The index hospitalization morbidity and mortality of rib fractures among older adults (aged ≥65 years) is well-known, yet the burden and risks for readmissions after rib fractures in this vulnerable population remain understudied. We aimed to characterize the burdens and etiologies associated with 3-month readmissions among older adults who suffer rib fractures. We hypothesized that readmissions would be common and associated with modifiable etiologies.

Mashup Score: 17The Art of Pursuasion and the Value of Debate - 6 month(s) ago
Surgery has been one of the foremost surgical science publications for decades. Our predecessors as editors-in-chief established a founding principle that we would publish the best surgical science- basic, clinical, and translational. They, themselves, were prominent surgical scientists and contributed mightily to the surgical science knowledge bank. As we reflect on our past and contemplate our future as a surgical science journal, we want to promote dialogue in surgical science and consider more than the scientific data in a manuscript.
