As survival rates in childhood cancer progress significantly, health outcomes in adulthood are pivotal to quality of life (QoL). Female patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation for childhood cancer may experience adverse effects such as gonadotoxicity-related ovarian insufficiency. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) is well studied in adults, but has only recently started to be explored in an effort to preserve fertility in young patients with childhood cancer. This systematic review aims to critically highlight contemporary outcomes of cryopreservation in female pediatric cancer patients.

Mashup Score: 0Primary and secondary vaginal reconstruction with autologous buccal mucosa and intravaginal wound vacuum therapy - 19 day(s) ago
Vaginal reconstruction may be required for complex congenital vaginal defects, disorders of sexual development, and congenital vaginal agenesis, as well as in secondary repair of post-surgical vaginal stricture or stenosis [1]. The aims of vaginoplasty include constructing a low maintenance vaginal replacement with minimal morbidity, acceptable cosmesis, and excellent long-term function [2,3]. Multiple surgical techniques have been developed, including the Vecchietti technique, Davydov procedure, bowel vaginoplasty, and the McIndoe vaginoplasty, though no one approach has emerged as the preferred procedure [4].

Bowel management programs are efficacious in pediatric patients with fecal incontinence or intractable constipation unresponsive to standard treatment. No studies have been done examining outcomes in adults. The objective of this study was to assess continence and quality of life outcomes in adults who have underwent bowel management program.

Mashup Score: 10Difficult gall bladder in adolescents with cystic fibrosis and symptomatic cholelithiasis: What is the best treatment choice? - 26 day(s) ago
Gallbladder disease (GBD) has become increasingly common in children. Established risk factors for GBD in childhood include hemolytic disease; ileal resections; obesity; cystic fibrosis; and the use of parenteral nutrition, ceftriaxone, and oral contraceptives. Notably, patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) face an increased risk of developing a wide range of CF-related conditions, including a significantly greater odds ratio for conditions such as cholelithiasis [1,2]. Furthermore, surgeons should be aware of the high possibility of encountering a difficult gallbladder operation in these patients.

Mashup Score: 15Controlled long term outcome of pyloromyotomy for pyloric stenosis: No long-term adverse effect - 28 day(s) ago
Pyloromyotomy for pyloric stenosis is one of the more common surgical procedures performed on infants. The long-term effects of the procedure are however unclear. The purpose of this study was to study the effects into adult life, compare them with controls and to see if there is a need for structured follow up of patients.

Mashup Score: 10Neonatal gastric perforation and non invasive mechanical ventilation - 1 month(s) ago
Neonatal gastric perforation (NGP) is a rare and life-threatening complication. It represents approximately 7% of all neonatal gastrointestinal perforations (GIP) [1,2]. Although some cases are idiopathic, several causes have been identified: iatrogenic (nasogastric tube insertion, mechanical ventilation), congenital abnormalities with a gastric outlet obstruction, necrotizing enterocolitis, and drugs like steroids, among others. Prematurity and low birth weight have also been identified as risk factors for NGP [1,2].

Mashup Score: 0OHVIRA (Obstructed Hemivagina and Ipsilateral Renal Anomaly or Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome): Is it time for age-specific management? - 1 month(s) ago
OHVIRA (Obstructed Hemivagina and Ipsilateral Renal Anomaly or Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome) is a rare Müllerian malformation. Usually, symptoms begin with worsening dysmenorrhea in post-menarche adolescents. The management in pre-menarche period is controversial and has only recently been subject of study.

Mashup Score: 16A Comparison of Commonly Utilized Diagnostic Biopsy Techniques for Pediatric Patients With Cancer: A Systematic Review by the APSA Cancer Committee - 1 month(s) ago
Historically, surgical biopsy (SB) for diagnosis of pediatric solid tumors was considered necessary to provide adequate tissue for histologic and molecular analysis. Less invasive biopsy techniques such as image-guided core needle biopsy (CNB), have shown comparable accuracy with decreased morbidity in some adult studies. However, data regarding the safety and efficacy of CNB in pediatric tumors is limited. This study’s aim was to assess the overall rate of successful diagnosis and safety of CNB compared to SB in children with malignancies.
