Many countries are demonstrating strong engagement and advancements in scaling-up infection prevention and control (IPC) strategies and actions, but overall, the progress is slow, and gains are at risk. In 2021, only 4 out of 106 countries (3.8%) had all minimum requirements for IPC in place at the national level.1 In multiple World Health Organization surveys, training and education was the weakest component of IPC programs around the world both at the national and facility level.1 This is reflected in lack of standardized IPC curricula for pregraduate courses (eg, medicine, nursing, midwifery), in-service training, and for postgraduate specialization, leading to discontinuous delivery of IPC training and lack of experts and mentors, and of career pathways for IPC professionals.

Previously, blood and body fluid exposures were managed by a visit to the University Employee Health Clinic during normal business hours and the Emergency Department after hours. We implemented the “S-T-I-C-K” program where health care personnel were evaluated immediately after exposure by a nurse-driven 24/7 hotline. Increasing accessibility to care and a simplified process for exposure management led to a significant decrease in Emergency Department utilization and time between the exposure and receipt of post-exposure prophylaxis.

Mashup Score: 0Investigation of a pseudo-outbreak of Mycobacterium franklinni - 14 day(s) ago
Mycobacterium franklinni is a ubiquitous organism that can cause lung, skin, and soft tissue infections. Due to its pervasive nature, it can be a source of outbreaks via contamination of shared medical equipment or tools. When investigating outbreaks of this type of organism it is important to consider the clinical picture of the patient when evaluating if there is a pseudo-outbreak as well as identifying if treatment is needed for patients.

Mashup Score: 0Extended spectrum beta-lactamase carriage among elderly residents of a long-term care facility in Beirut - 14 day(s) ago
Antimicrobial resistance is an emerging problem worldwide, endangering antimicrobials efficacy and resulting in high rates of morbidity and mortality. It is one of the major concerns that health care facilities are facing nowadays. Mainly, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales play a role in hydrolyzing β-lactams, specifically the third-generation cephalosporins. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of fecal carriage and molecular characterization of ESBL-producing Enterobacterales among Lebanese elderly residents in a long-term care facility (Dar Al-Ajaza Al Islamia Hospital).

A prospective randomized controlled interventional study was conducted at a quaternary care multispecialty hospital in South India with the primary objective of identifying opportunities to improve antibiotic prescribing patterns in neonates, children, and adolescents. The hospital has a robust clinical pharmacist program wherein antibiotic prescriptions were checked for appropriateness of antibiotic dose, route, formulation, duration of therapy, and IV to oral switch. These characteristics of antibiotic use were therefore similar in the 75 children in the control and 75 in the intervention group.
